  • Women in Mining, Industry Norms, and Rural Patriarchy

Open Access•Donna Bridges, Elizabeth Wulff et al.•ARTICLE•Gender Work and Organization•2026•Referências: 11

Rural industries are historically male‐dominated with women commonly out‐migrating to metropolitan areas in search of work opportunities. Rural industries, such as mining, have the potential to recruit women from rural areas, offering employment, training, and income prospects and to contribute positively to rural women's economic and employment success. However, this potential is unrealized because of unsafe and sexist workplaces. This paper rep…

  • Girls in trades

Donna Bridges, Elizabeth Wulff et al.•ARTICLE•Journal of Vocational Education…•2024

When women enter occupations that have historically and traditionally been the realm of men, they face a multitude of barriers that make their experience difficult and that contribute to a gender-segregated workforce. Vocational Education and Training (VET) is the entryway to employment in the skilled trades, and VET providers have a role in introducing students to the industry, in the formation of occupational identity and occupational behaviour…

  • Impacts of Climate Change on Work Health and Safety in Australia

Open Access•Lucia Wuersch, André Neher et al.•ARTICLE•International Journal of…•2023

This scoping review explores the extant literature on climate change impacts on Workplace Health and Safety (WHS) in Australia. It maps the coverage of climate hazards, occupations at risk, and health and socio-economic impacts with the aim of identifying climate change impacts on WHS in Australia and associated knowledge gaps. We used a scoping review approach to identify and investigate 41 scholarly works at the nexus between climate change and…

  • Women who 'talk the tools' and 'walk the work

    Open Access•Elizabeth Wulff, Donna Bridges et al.•ARTICLE•Journal of Sociology•2022•Citada por: 1•Referências: 38

Social and cultural capital are valuable assets that assist individuals to succeed in work. This article reports on gender segregation in the skilled trades. We use Bourdieu's theory of capital to illuminate how women are successfully recruited and retained in the skilled trades. Our findings indicate that women with pre-existing forms of capital are advantaged. Notably tradeswomen utilise masculine gender capital while maintaining aspects of fem…

  • Resilience for gender inclusion

Open Access•Donna Bridges, Elizabeth Wulff et al.•ARTICLE•Gender Work and Organization•2021•Citada por: 15•Referências: 14

What is resilience in the context of work environments where women face barriers as significant as career discrimination and harassment? In such a context, is resilience an individual responsibility? How can organizations contribute to and support employee resilience? And where is gender in this equation? This conceptual paper explores these questions using aviation, the skilled trades (i.e., carpentry, welding, plumbing) and the military as case…

  • A trade of one's own”

Open Access•Donna Bridges, Larissa Bamberry et al.•ARTICLE•Gender Work and Organization•2021•Citada por: 12•Referências: 12

The skilled trades are highly gender segregated occupations. Unsurprisingly, research about women in this male‐dominated sector focuses on the various barriers to inclusion. In contrast, this article identifies factors that have contributed to women's successes. Drawing on in‐depth interviews with tradeswomen, we found that the success factors for women in the skilled trades were aligned with social and cultural capital. Findings also indicate th…

  • Worker stress and the prospect of job loss in a fragmented organisation

Open Access•Darryn Snell, David Schmitt et al.•ARTICLE•Qualitative Research in…•2015

Purpose – The purpose of this paper is to advance research on job loss-related stress through a critical realism framework which considers the interplay between organisational context and personal agency and its implications for worker stress in the pre-lay-off stage. Design/methodology/approach – The paper adopts a qualitative case study approach and considers two groups of workers confronted with the prospects of job loss in Australia’s power g…

  • Restructuring women’s work; labour market and household gender regimes in the Greater Latrobe Valley, Australia

    Larissa Bamberry•ARTICLE•Gender Place & Culture•2015•Referências: 5

This article examines the impact of economic restructuring on gender relations. It examines the implications of labour market change for households within a region, in this case the Greater Latrobe Valley, Victoria, Australia. The argument is that the unchanging gender structures of the labour market constrain the intentions and efforts of individuals within households to significantly alter household gender relations. The analysis considers how …
