  • ANU Radiocarbon Date List IX

    Open Access•H A Polach, E G Rhodes et al.•ARTICLE•Radiocarbon•1982•Citada por: 1•Referências: 2

During the last seven years, there has been a concerted effort in eastern Australia to obtain 14 C ages from detrital shell samples of prograded sand barriers composed of beach ridges and chenier deposits (Cook and Polach, 1973; Cook and Mayo, 1977; Thom, Polach, and Bowman, 1978; Thom et al , 1981). These ages were used to establish the age sequence of deposition and rates of progradation. This date list is the result of work in two areas of the…

  • ANU Radiocarbon Date List VIII

    Open Access•H A Polach, R F McLean et al.•ARTICLE•Radiocarbon•1981•Referências: 6

The aims of the 1973 Great Barrier Reef Expedition's radiocarbon dating programs were: 1) to collect live specimens from various reef environments to serve as modern reference standards, 2) to evaluate suitability of materials from drilling, geomorphic, and sediment programs for dating purposes, and 3) to date appropriate samples related to those programs. Radiometric ages provide a time scale for evolution of reefs and reef islands, and the hist…

  • C Ages and Magnetic Stratigraphy in Three Australian Maars

    Open Access•C E Barton, H A Polach•ARTICLE•Radiocarbon•1980•Citada por: 2•Referências: 11

Detailed radiocarbon chronologies from three volcanic crater lakes (maars) in southeast Australia are examined in relationship to the magnetic mineral stratigraphies within lakes, and the magnetic secular variation stratigraphy between lakes. Some implications for magnetic dating are considered

  • Age Structure of Holocene Coastal Sediments

    Open Access•E G Rhodes, H A Polach et al.•ARTICLE•Radiocarbon•1980•Citada por: 8•Referências: 13

Shells in beach-ridge and chenier Holocene deposits from the Gulf of Carpentaria, Queensland, have been dated by radiocarbon. Possible contamination of carbonate by post-depositional diagenetic processes, isotopic fractionation, ocean reservoir environmental effect, and association of biological age of sample material with depositional event have been examined in order to validate dating of samples from this environment. A numerical methodology u…

  • ANU Radiocarbon Date List VII

    Open Access•H A Polach, B G Thom et al.•ARTICLE•Radiocarbon•1979•Referências: 3

Along SE coast of Australia a variety of Holocene barriers composed of siliceous sand and shell detritus occur within bedrock-confined embayments. On basis of morphostratigraphy 4 barrier types are recognized: prograded, stationary, receded and episodic transgressive dunes. Several subtypes are also distinguished. Composite bay barriers involving partial eolian reworking of a prograded barrier constitute most complex examples of Holocene depositi…

  • ANU Radiocarbon Date List VI

    Open Access•H A Polach, M J Head et al.•ARTICLE•Radiocarbon•1978•Citada por: 1•Referências: 25

The following list contains most of the measurements made during 1974, since our last list (R, 1973, v 15, p 241-251). All measurements were performed on a Beckman LS-200 Liquid Scintillation Spectrometer following previously published setting up (Polach, 1974), automatic cycling (Polach, 1969) and benzene synthesis (Polach and Stipp, 1966; Polach et al , 1972) procedures

  • ANU Radiocarbon Dating Laboratory General Projects

    R Jones, Rebecca K Jones et al.•ARTICLE•Australian Archaeology•1975

The laboratory is playing an important role in a number of research projects. Indeed, there is a continuing and increasing need for laboratory generated research involving \nimprovements in dating techniques, analysis, interpretation and reporting of results; parameters fundamental to the validity of dating such as environmental contamination and selection of applicable dating standards. Equally important is participation on a cooperative basis i…

  • Sydney University Natural Radiocarbon Measurements I

    Open Access•R Gillespie, H A Polach et al.•ARTICLE•Radiocarbon•1972•Citada por: 4•Referências: 3

Preparations to establish a radiocarbon dating laboratory at the University of Sydney were made in 1970 in the Department of Physical Chemistry, to support Ph.D. studies and to supplement existing dating services in Australia to the archaeologic and geologic communities

  • Slope Deposits in the Snowy Mountains, South-Eastern Australia

    Open Access•A B Costin, H A Polach•ARTICLE•Quaternary Research•1971

Slope deposits in the Snowy Mountains of south-eastern Australia have a wide distribution above 1000 m elevation on slopes between approximately 5° and 25° which are well stabilized by the existing forest vegetation. The present environment is not severe enough to initiate slope instability. The slope deposits consist of fines with gravel and angular stones showing preferred downslope orientation, overlying a generally smooth substrate of weather…

  • Anu Radiocarbon Date List IV

    Open Access•H A Polach, J F Lovering et al.•ARTICLE•Radiocarbon•1970•Citada por: 6•Referências: 13

The present date list describes the first stage of a co-operative study on the validity of dating secondary soil carbonates in arid and semi-arid environments of Australia. Because of the complex nature of the physical and chemical variables in a soil environment, many additional samples are being dated from stratigraphically controlled sites before final evaluation of carbonate reliability is possible

  • ANU Radiocarbon Date List III

    Open Access•H A Polach, J Chappell et al.•ARTICLE•Radiocarbon•1969•Citada por: 4•Referências: 16

The present list comprises only research projects undertaken by the laboratory on the validity of radiocarbon dating of soil, shell, coral and very old samples, all in presence of suspected contamination. All measurements were performed on a Beckman LS-200 liquid scintillation spectrometer (Radiocarbon, 1968, v. 10, p. 179-199). The chemical treatment of samples is given within the text of each section

  • ANU Radiocarbon Date List II

The C 14 measurements reported here were carried out by the Radiocarbon Laboratory, Dept. of Geophysics and Geochemistry, A.N.U., between Jan. and Aug. 1967. Laboratory equipment consists of a Beckman methane gas-proportional unit (ANU I) supplemented in Dec. 1966 by an automatic 3-channel Beckman model LS-200 liquid scintillation spectrometer. Synthesis of methane and benzene is the same as used in ANU I and described by Polach and Stipp (1967).…

The Radiocarbon Dating Laboratory is installed in the Department of Geophysics and Geochemistry, Institute of Advanced Studies of the Australian National University. The Australian Institute of Aboriginal Studies has materially aided the establishment of the laboratory and is allocated a major proportion of the dating time over the next three years for samples in Australian Aboriginal archaeology. Beyond this the laboratory is to serve research n…
