  • Why God Cannot Do What Sterba Wants

    Open Access•Stephen T Davis•ARTICLE•Religions•2022•Referências: 1

Sterba argues that if God existed, God would allow lower-level evils and suffering but should and would prevent all significant and horrendous evils. Since such serious evils do exist, God does not exist. In reply, I argue that in creating a Sterba world, God would be violating one of God's central purposes for the world, viz., that human beings be rationally free to deny God's existence and presence. • Divine Omniscience and Human Freedom

    Open Access•Stephen T Davis•ARTICLE•Religious Studies•1979

Theists typically believe the following two propositions: (1) God is omniscient, and (2) Human beings are free. Are they consistent? In order to decide, we must first ask what they mean. Roughly, let us say that a being is omniscient if for any proposition he knows whether it is true or false. Since I have no wish to deny that there are true and false propositions about future states of affairs (as some philosophers have done), omniscience includ…

  • A Defence of the Free Will Defence

    Open Access•Stephen T Davis•ARTICLE•Religious Studies•1972

In this paper I shall discuss a certain theodicy, or line of argument in response to the problem of evil, viz, the so-called ‘free will defence’. What I propose to do is defend this theodicy against an objection that has been made to it in recent years
