Quality of Life of Single Mothers by Choice in Israel
Although single motherhood by choice has become more common in the last three decades, little is known about the influence of this family structure on the quality of life of mothers. To address this gap, the current study examined the quality of life profile of 61 single mothers by choice (SMC) in comparison to that of 53 divorced and 60 married mothers in Israel. The findings indicate similarities between the three groups in the psychological, p…
Social Workers' Decisions on Removal
This study examined whether social workers' decisions on removal could be predicted by features of the children, the parents, and the children's quality of life as the workers perceive and assess them at the beginning of their decision making process. The study was carried out on 99 children at risk, between three and thirteen years old, most of whom suffered from neglect and/or psychological injury. The findings show that the examined features o…

Social Workers Custody Recommendations
This study of the custody recommendations of 130 social workers in Israel shows that they generally recommended custody with the parent with whom the child was expected to have the higher quality of life (as assessed by Shye's Systemic Quality of Life Model), whose economic status was better, who had fewer emotional, physical, and cognitive problems, and who were not engaged in criminal activity. The findings also show, however, that the disparit…
The least detrimental alternative
The decision to remove children at risk from their homes entails serious dilemmas, since both remaining in and being removed have strong negative psychological repercussions. This article presents an empirical investigation of 194 Israeli child protection officers’ decisions on 368 children at risk. Findings showed that while the officers predicted that all the children would have a better quality of life outside their homes, they removed only th…

Assessing the Quality of Internat Life
A conceptual framework is presented for defining and assessing the environment in "total institutions" (internats). This conceptual framework based on the Quality of Life Map, includes the systemic components of the internat and its environment
Deinstitutionalization and the Benevolent Asylum
The current movement toward deinstitutionalization derives substantial support from learning theory. We now have ample evidence, accumulated over several decades of painstaking research, that models and reinforcements yield behavior. Thus, if the goal is a person competent in the community then the models and rewards must resemble those of the community. This is the logic for those who leave the institution, and herein lies the inherent dilemma o…
