  • Cohort Divides in Welfare Attitudes

    Open Access•Jongmin Yang•ARTICLE•Sociology Compass•2026

This study examines inter‐cohort differences in welfare spending preferences and welfare tax willingness in South Korea, and how these differences evolved across three time points (2019, 2022, 2025), using supplementary welfare attitude survey data from the Korea Welfare Panel Study. Employing pooled ordinal logistic regression and OLS regression with cohort‐by‐year interaction terms, findings reveal that younger birth‐cohort groups consistently …

  • Coalition formation in tax fairness judgements by combined income–asset status in the context of South Korea

    Open Access•Jongmin Yang•ARTICLE•Journal of Social Policy•2026

This study uses latent class analysis to map the structure of tax-burden perceptions across income strata and to test whether combined income–asset status gives rise to coalition patterns. Based on Korean panel data, respondents are classified into upper, middle and lower groups by joint income–asset deciles. Five latent classes emerge, and multinomial logistic models show that membership probabilities differ systematically between those above an…

  • A Study of the Relationship Between Middle-Class Identification and Welfare Attitudes in Korean Society

Jongmin Yang•ARTICLE•The journal of Korean studies•2026

This study empirically analyzes how homeownership and wealth accumulation through homeownership affect perceptions of belonging to the middle class. The study also examines how this perception affects attitudes toward the expansion of public welfare spending. The study finds that individuals in Korean society do not perceive themselves as middle class based on homeownership alone, suggesting that asset size may play a crucial role in middle-class…

  • Subjective class status and redistribution attitudes

    Open Access•Jongmin Yang•ARTICLE•International Journal of…•2026•Referências: 27

This study examines how subjective class status perceptions of oneself and parents influence redistribution policy attitudes through sequential mediation by upward mobility expectations and meritocratic distribution attitudes in Korean society. Using path analysis on young adults aged 20–39 from the 2023 Inequality and Fairness Public Perception Panel Survey, we found that subjective class status perceptions do not directly affect redistribution …

  • A multidimensional approach to attitudes toward the causes of poverty

    Open Access•Jongmin Yang•ARTICLE•International Journal of Social…•2025•Referências: 5

This study examines the multidimensionality of attitudes toward the causes of poverty in Korean society, moving beyond single‐dimensional perspectives. Using latent class analysis, nine distinct perception types were identified, with 44% of respondents recognizing individual, structural, and fatalistic factors simultaneously. Demographic factors such as age, labor market status, and political ideology were more strongly associated with perception…

  • Household Assets and Welfare Attitudes

Jongmin Yang, Dokyun Kim•ARTICLE•Korean Journal of Sociology•2022
