  • Stressed, Depressed and Exhausted

Open Access•Robin Burrow, Rachel Williams et al.•ARTICLE•Work Employment and Society•2020•Citada por: 3•Referências: 11

This article foregrounds the experiences of a newly qualified teacher - 'Daniel' - in the state education sector in the United Kingdom. It provides an insight into the under-explored realities of teaching work and an empirical connection with a segment of the UK public sector that successive governments have positioned as central to economic and social prosperity. It centres on why nine out of ten teachers who participated in the 2017 National Sk…

  • A food environments feedback system (FoodBack) for empowering citizens and change agents to create healthier community food places

Open Access•Stefanie Vandevijvere, Rachel Williams et al.•ARTICLE•Health Promotion International•2019

This study developed a systems-based approach (called FoodBack) to empower citizens and change agents to create healthier community food places. Formative evaluations were held with citizens and change agents in six diverse New Zealand communities, supplemented by semi-structured interviews with 85 change agents in Auckland and Hamilton in 2015-2016. The emerging system was additionally reviewed by public health experts from diverse organizations…

  • Estimating Model-Adjusted Risks, Risk Differences, and Risk Ratios From Complex Survey Data

G S Bieler, Gayle Bieler et al.•ARTICLE•American Journal of Epidemiology•2010

There is increasing interest in estimating and drawing inferences about risk or prevalence ratios and differences instead of odds ratios in the regression setting. Recent publications have shown how the GENMOD procedure in SAS (SAS Institute Inc., Cary, North Carolina) can be used to estimate these parameters in non-population-based studies. In this paper, the authors show how model-adjusted risks, risk differences, and risk ratio estimates can b…

  • Pregnancy outcomes among Spanish-surname women in California

    Rachel Williams, R L Williams et al.•ARTICLE•American Journal of Public Health•1986•Citada por: 39•Referências: 9

We compared pregnancy outcomes among United States-born and Mexican-born women having Spanish surnames with US-born Whites and Blacks using California's 1981 matched birth-death cohort file. Maternal risk characteristics between US-born Black women and US-born women with Spanish surnames were similar. In contrast, Latino women, regardless of national origin, delivered small proportions of low weight infants as compared to Blacks. Birthweight-spec…

  • Vehicular carbon monoxide screening

    Robyn Williams, R L Williams•ARTICLE•American Journal of Public Health•1985•Referências: 7

A community program of screening and education for prevention of vehicular carbon monoxide (CO) poisoning among a high-risk population in a cross-cultural setting is presented. The program was developed after two infant deaths in separate incidents of vehicular CO poisoning. The results of the screening show 18.6 per cent of vehicles exceeding the Environmental Protection Agency eight-hour standard for CO exposure, and 2.6 per cent exceeding the …

  • Perinatal outcomes among Medicaid recipients in California

    Frank D Norris, R L Williams et al.•ARTICLE•American Journal of Public Health•1984•Referências: 8

It is important to document the current status of health outcomes among the medically needy so as to establish baselines to gauge the impact of future program changes. We studied the birth characteristics and perinatal outcomes of women covered by Medicaid in California versus those who were not covered in 1968 and in 1978. Our findings show a high degree of equity and a trend of improvement in perinatal mortality among Medicaid beneficiaries. Th…

  • Controlling the rise in cesarean section rates by the dissemination of information from vital records

    R L Williams, P M Chen•ARTICLE•American Journal of Public Health•1983•Citada por: 11•Referências: 6

The recent rapid increase in cesarean childbirth is a source of growing public health concern. We suggest that one method of ameliorating the rise would be to disseminate hospital-specific cesarean section rates. To make such rates comparable between hospitals, it is necessary to adjust for variations in maternal and newborn factors associated with cesarean section. We therefore applied an indirect standardization technique to three years of Cali…

  • Cesarean section, fetal monitoring, and perinatal mortality in California

    Rachel Williams, R L Williams et al.•ARTICLE•American Journal of Public Health•1979•Citada por: 14•Referências: 12

The rate of cesarean section in California has been growing at a compound rate of about 10 per cent per annum since 1969, coinciding with the advent of fetal monitoring. It is of interest, therefore, to study the distribution and efficacy of obstetric interventions. Information derived from the 1977 California birth cohort and a survey questionnaire was used to study the factors associated with the rate of cesarean section in 323 hospitals. Signi…
