Is the use of high correlated color temperature light at night related to delay of sleep timing in university students? A cross-country study in Japan and China
BackgroundBlue-enriched white light at night has the potential to delay the circadian rhythm in daily life. This study was conducted to determine whether the use of high correlated color temperature (CCT) light at home at night is associated with delay of sleep timing in university students.MethodsThe survey was conducted in 2014-2015 in 447 university students in Japan and 327 students in China. Habitual sleep timing and type of CCT light at hom…
Cognitive characteristics of older Japanese drivers
Some causes of accidents among older drivers are: not paying attention to traffic signals; missing stop lines; and having to deal with and misjudging emergency situations. These causes of accidents reveal problems with attention and cognition. Such incidents are also related to driver perception and stress-coping mechanisms. It is important to examine the relation of stress reactions to attention and cognition as a factor influencing the causes o…
Effects of Different Light Intensities in the Morning on Dim Light Melatonin Onset
The present study evaluated the effects of exposure to light intensity in the morning on dim light melatonin onset (DLMO). The tested light intensities were 750 lux, 150 lux, 3000 lux, 6000 lux and 12,000 lux (horizontal illuminance at cornea), using commercial 5000 K fluorescent lamps. Eleven healthy males aged 21-31 participated in 2-day experiments for each light condition. On the first experimental day (day 1), subjects were exposed to dim li…
Effects of Load and Gradient on Energy Cost of Running
This study quantified the interaction of electromyography (EMG) obtained from the vastus lateralis and metabolic energy cost of running (C(r); mL·[mass+load](-1)·meter(-1)), an index of running economy, during submaximal treadmill running. Experiments were conducted with and without load on the back on a motor-driven treadmill on the downhill, level and uphill slopes. The obtained EMG was full-wave rectified and integrated (iEMG). The iEMG was di…
Relationships between Salivary Estradiol and Components of Mental Rotation in Young Men
Testosterone and estradiol levels were measured by saliva assays in 15 young men, and their relationships with different processes in a mental rotation task were elucidated. The estradiol level was positively correlated with reaction time; this effect was yielded by the slope of functions relating performance to angular disparity. These findings suggest that estrogen may inhibit the performance of a mental rotation task by affecting perception of…
Inhibition of Heart Rate Variability during Sleep in Humans by 6700 K Pre-sleep Light Exposure
Two different spectral analyses of heart rate (HR) variability (HRV) were performed on seven young male subjects to evaluate the effects of different color temperatures of light exposure (6700 K, 5000 K, 3000 K) before sleep on cardiac vagal activity. In investigating HRV, we used an ordinary fast Fourier transform (FFT) and coarse graining spectral analysis (CGSA), which selectively extracts random fractal components from a given time series. Th…
Variations in the Light-induced Suppression of Nocturnal Melatonin with Special Reference to Variations in the Pupillary Light Reflex in Humans
The purpose of the present study was to elucidate the existence of individual differences of pupil response to light stimulation, and to confirm the reproducibility of this phenomenon. Furthermore, the relationship between the individual differences in nocturnal melatonin suppression induced by lighting and the individual differences of pupillary light response (PLR) was examined. The pupil diameter and salivary melatonin content of 20 male stude…
Characteristics of pulmonary diffusing capacity in Japanese. On the sexual and ethnic differences
Pulmonary diffusing capacity for CO (DL), the diffusing capacity of the pulmonary capillary membrane, and pulmonary capillary blood volume were measured for 63 male and female subjects aged 17 to 33 years in both sitting and supine postures. From the relationship of these values to morphological factors, the existence and cause of sexual and ethnic differences in DL were investigated. The average DL values for males in both positions were about 3…
Postural and Thermal Effects on Pulmonary Diffusing Capacity at Rest
Pulmonary diffusing capacity for carbon monoxide (DL) was measured in recumbent and sitting postures in five healthy male subjects under ambient temperatures of 12, 20, 28 and 36°C. DL increased by about 30% from 36°C to 12°C in both postures. DL in the recumbent posture was always larger than that in the sitting one and these postural change was not affected by change in ambient temperatures. Changes in DL with ambient temperature were parallel …
On the Evaluation of Pulmonary Diffusing Capacity during Exercise
The purpose of this study is to examine the linearity and the uniformity of increase in pulmonary diffusing capacity for carbon monoxide during exercise. The subjects were four healthy volunteers (22 yr old) who were studied at rest and during exercise. Exercise was performed in duplicate with an electronically braked bicycle ergometer at a load of 50, 70, 90, 110 or 130 watts for about 15 min. Diffusing capacity increased in a linear fashion wit…
Changes in Pulmonary Diffusing Capacity at Rest under Various Conditions of Posture and Temperature in Male and Female
Changes in pulmonary diffusing capacity for carbon monoxide (DL), the diffusing capacity of the pulmonary capillary membrane (DM) and pulmonary capillary blood volume (VC) at rest were examined in eight adult subjects of both sexes by the breath-holding method under different posture and temperature conditions; i. e., in a supine position and a head-up position (45°) by the use of a tilting bed at three ambient temperatures of 15, 25 and 35°C. Un…
The Relations between Body Composition and Aerobic Work Capacity in Fukuoka Residents Aged 12, 13 and 18, 19 Years
The estimated maximal oxygen uptake and some indices of body size and composition, including body height, weight, and skinfold thickness at two sites have been determined on subjects aged 12, 13 and 18, 19 in Fukuoka during step work. Sex difference in maximal oxygen uptake in aged 18, 19 groups and age difference in body fat percent of weight in females were shown significantly. There were different regression equations of maximal oxygen uptake …
Heart Rate as an Index of Oxygen Intake
The purpose of this study is to investigate the relibaility and validity of prediction of the oxygen intake during works on the basis of heart rate at work.During four kinds of standard treadmill walking of 3.6km/h with a slope varying from o to 15 degrees and four kinds of standard bicycle ergometer work of o to 900kgm/min, the oxygen intake and heart rate were measured on four young adult males(Table1).For the whole subjects and for each indivi…
Factor of Physical Fitness Test and Relationships with Physical Characteristics in Young Adult Females and Males
This study was made to investigate the factor of physical fitness test, which has been developed by the Ministry of Education and consists of seven different measurements such as side step, sargent jump, back strength, grips strength, trunk extension, trunk flexion and step test, and the validity of estimation for the total score of the tests from several physical characteristics. Physical fitness test, morphological and physiological characteris…
Postural Effect on Oxygen Intake and Heart Rate and Sex Difference in It
Oxygen intake and heart rate during ten basic postures were measured in 13 young male adults. Significant difference for different postures were more frequently observed for mean heart rate levels than for oxygen intake (Tables 3 & 4). The analysis of covariance for both measurements disclosed that changes in heart rate level were, to a considerable extent, independent from the oxygen intake level (Table 5). The regression equation of heart rate …
