  • Predicting less, understanding more

    Open Access•Amanda J Fairchild, Josh Gupta‐Kagan et al.•ARTICLE•Children and Youth Services Review•2026

Machine learning algorithms (MLAs) have been deeply embedded across domains, valued for their capacity to analyze large-scale data and their ability to support a range of descriptive and predictive tasks. Despite their versatility, most applications of MLAs to date have focused on individual-level prediction at the expense of broader structural insights. This paper shifts that focus by using MLAs to examine how juvenile and family court intake st…

  • Phenylketonuria

    Open Access•A Barclay, Olivia Walton•ARTICLE•Psychological Reports•1988

This study investigated influences of diagnostic phenylalanines, age at initiation of diet, and dietary control, separately and in combination, on cognitive development for 29 phenylketonuric children (17 boys and 12 girls) who ranged in age from 1 to 1,184 days. Initial serum phenylalanine concentrations and age at initiation of therapy were significantly related to cognitive development, whereas neither dietary and biochemical control relative …

  • Prepaid Group Practice in Sault Ste. Marie, Ontario

    J E F Hastings, Frederick D Mott et al.•ARTICLE•Medical Care•1973

One year's utilization of medical and hospital services by some 3,300 Canadian steelworkers and their families who belonged to a prepaid group practice plan has been compared with utilization by the families of fellow members of the same union Local whose care was provided by independently practicing physicians. Although the group practice had no financial incentive to economize on inpatient care, its rate of hospital utilization was lower by abo…

  • Factor Analytic Study of Pari Responses of Mothers of Head Start Children

    Open Access•Allan C Yater, A Yater et al.•ARTICLE•Psychological Reports•1968

Parental attitudes toward childrearing were studied among mothers of Head Start children, using factor analytic techniques. This analysis yielded three factors: Authoritarian-Control, Democratic Attitudes, and Hostility-Rejection. Since these dimensions are substantially the same as those emerging from previous factorial studies of parental attitudes among other groups of mothers, the findings were interpreted as suggesting that cultural attitude…

  • Comparisons of Scores on Quick Test and Stanford-Binet Form L-M, for Retarded Children

    Open Access•Robert E Lamp, A Barclay•ARTICLE•Psychological Reports•1968

For a sample of 40 young educable retarded children, the correlation between QT IQs and SB-LM IQs was .61. Thus the Quick Test correlates moderately well with the Binet, even with a restricted range of test scores. The QT IQ was significantly higher than the Binet IQ but showed no significant sex differences in test performance. These findings suggest that as with the adult and adolescent retardate, the Quick Test can be useful in assessing funct…

  • The Quick Test as a Screening Device for Intellectually Subnormal Children

    Open Access•Robert E Lamp, A Barclay•ARTICLE•Psychological Reports•1967

For a sample of 40 educable retarded children, correlations between WISC IQs and Quick Test IQs were .53 (Verbal Scale), .32 (Performance Scale), and .50 (Full Scale). The QT mean IQ was significantly higher than the mean WISC Verbal and Full Scale IQs; there was no significant difference between the QT mean IQ and the mean WISC Performance IQ, although the correlation between these scales was somewhat lower. The findings suggest that, as with th…

  • Stanford-Binet and Goodenough-Harris Test Performances of Head Start Children

    Open Access•K Olivier, A Barclay•ARTICLE•Psychological Reports•1967

The characteristics of revised Stanford-Binet (S-B) and Goodenough-Harris protocols (GHDT) were investigated for 188 culturally disadvantaged children. These children scored in the low normal level of intelligence, girls were superior to boys, and whites were superior to Negroes. Further, a race and sex analysis indicated white females showed functional superiority relative to Negro male and female children while there were no differences between…

  • Influence of Variations in Paradigms and Associative Value on Mediated Transfer

    Open Access•A Barclay•ARTICLE•Psychological Reports•1965

The present study was undertaken in order to investigate the influence of variations in paradigms and meaningfulness of learning materials upon mediated transfer in verbal learning. Three mediation paradigms were investigated, using two levels of associative value within each paradigm. Results indicated a highly significant main effect attributable to mediation and significant effects attributable both to paradigms and to associative value. Howev…

  • The Skew in Clinical Psychology

    A Barclay•ARTICLE•American Psychologist•1964•Citada por: 2

  • Mediated Transfer in Verbal Learning

    Open Access•A Barclay•ARTICLE•Psychological Reports•1963

An attempt was made to isolate the effect of mediation from that of general transfer, using an experimental technique wherein mediating stimuli were under experimental control and wherein a sensitive comparison of mediated transfer and general transfer was thought to be possible. Statistical analysis suggested neither evidence for the presence of a mediation effect per se nor evidence for a differential effect attributable to the levels of occurr…
