Reliability and Validity of the HBSC Physical Activity Questionnaire in Japanese Adolescents
Background/Objectives : International physical activity (PA) questionnaires require a reliability and validity assessment in many countries to understand cross-cultural differences accurately. The current study examined the reliability and validity of the Japanese version of the WHO Health Behaviour in School-aged Children PA (HBSC-J) survey in adolescent students in Japan. Methods : The participants were 215 Japanese high school students. The HB…
Gender differences in the proportion of Japanese parents meeting 24‐h movement guidelines and associations with weight status
OBJECTIVES: Parents' healthy behaviors are important for both their health and role models for their children. The purpose of this study was to evaluate adherence to the three recommendations associated with health in the Canadian 24-h movement or Japanese physical activity (PA) guidelines and their relationship with weight status (underweight or obesity) in Japanese parents. METHODS: This cross-sectional study included 425 mothers and 237 father…
Relative age effect on the physical activity and sedentary behavior in children and adolescents aged 10 to 18 years old
The relative age effect on physical activity can persist after middle school, and the relatively younger individuals are more likely to replace physical activity with sedentary behavior
Accelerometer-Measured Physical Activity and Sedentary Time among Children in Japan before and during Covid-19
This study examined changes in physical activity (PA), sedentary behavior (SB), screen time, sleep, and executive function among Japanese preschoolers between COVID-19 pre-pandemic and pandemic periods, using cross-sectional and longitudinal data. Accelerometer data from 63 children aged 5-6 years were collected from three kindergartens in Tokyo, Japan, in late 2019 (pre-COVID-19). This was compared to the data of 49 children aged 5-6 years from …
Global Matrix 4.0 Physical Activity Report Card Grades for Children and Adolescents
Background : The Global Matrix 4.0 on physical activity (PA) for children and adolescents was developed to achieve a comprehensive understanding of the global variation in children’s and adolescents’ (5–17 y) PA, related measures, and key sources of influence. The objectives of this article were (1) to summarize the findings from the Global Matrix 4.0 Report Cards, (2) to compare indicators across countries, and (3) to explore trends related to t…
Neighborhood-level socioeconomic factors moderate the association between physical activity and relative age effect
Socioeconomic factors moderate the relative age effect on adolescents' physical activity. The relative age effect on adolescents' physical activity might be more likely to appear among adolescents from socioeconomically disadvantaged neighborhoods
Association of Neighborhood Food Environment and Physical Activity Environment With Obesity
Objective: This study examined the relationship between neighborhood food and physical activity environment, and obesity among elementary and junior high school students in Japan. Methods: The participants were fifth- to ninth-grade children (n=7277), who were attending municipal schools in Japan. Percent overweight (POW) was calculated using their age, gender, height, and weight, which were collected through a questionnaire. A POW of Results: In…
Prediction of Physical Activity Intensity with Accelerometry in Young Children
Background : An algorithm for the classification of ambulatory and non-ambulatory activities using the ratio of unfiltered to filtered synthetic acceleration measured with a triaxial accelerometer and predictive models for physical activity intensity (METs) in adults and in elementary school children has been developed. The purpose of the present study was to derive predictive equations for METs with a similar algorithm in young children. Methods…
The Choice of Pedometer Impacts on Daily Step Counts in Primary School Children under Free-Living Conditions
Background : We examined whether daily step counts under free-living conditions differed among four types of pedometers used by primary school children. Methods : In Study one, we compared the Yamax SW-200 (widely used in research) and the Kenz Lifecorder (accelerometer-based pedometer) in 30 children (6-12 years). In Study two, after confirming good correlation between these devices, we used Kenz Lifecorder as the criterion device and compared i…
Gender differences in physical activity and sedentary behavior of Japanese primary school children during school cleaning time, morning recess and lunch recess
These findings suggest that the total amount of school cleaning time, recess and lunch time likely contribute to daily MVPA but the beneficial effects should be further explored in future intervention studies
Global Matrix 3.0 Physical Activity Report Card Grades for Children and Youth
Background : Accumulating sufficient moderate to vigorous physical activity is recognized as a key determinant of physical, physiological, developmental, mental, cognitive, and social health among children and youth (aged 5–17 y). The Global Matrix 3.0 of Report Card grades on physical activity was developed to achieve a better understanding of the global variation in child and youth physical activity and associated supports. Methods : Work group…
Associations of Physical Activity and Sedentary Time in Primary School Children with Their Parental Behaviors and Supports
Background: The associations of objectively evaluated moderate-to-vigorous physical activity (MVPA) and sedentary time between primary school children and their fathers or mothers have not been fully understood. Therefore, we tested the associations in children. Methods: The participants were first to sixth grade boys (n = 166, 9.4 ± 1.6 years) and girls (n = 202, 9.4 ± 1.6 years) and their parents (fathers, n = 123 and mothers, n = 321). MVPA an…
Changes in Weight, Sedentary Behaviour and Physical Activity during the School Year and Summer Vacation
Background : To examine bidirectional associations between body weight and objectively assessed sedentary behaviour (SB) and physical activity (PA) during the school year and summer vacation. Methods : Participants were 209 Japanese boys and girls (9.0 ± 1.8 years at baseline). SB and PA were measured using triaxial accelerometry that discriminated between ambulatory and non-ambulatory PA, screen time measured by questionnaire during the school-t…
Objectively evaluated physical activity and sedentary time in primary school children by gender, grade and types of physical education lessons
Children did not engage in much MVPA and also spent time in sedentary time during PE, but there are no gender differences. The children were most active during ball game lessons. Therefore, it is important to increase MVPA and reduce sedentary time during PE in both genders
Seasonal changes in objectively measured sedentary behavior and physical activity in Japanese primary school children
These findings show that primary school children in Japan are less active in the summer vacation, as indicated by both higher SB and lower LPA and ambulatory MVPA in both genders. Moreover, the seasonal change in non-ambulatory MVPA for Japanese children was affected by gender. This study also suggests that sports participation and bedroom TV ownership may moderate seasonal changes in PA and SB. The results emphasize the need to take summer vacat…
Objectively-measured physical activity and body weight in Japanese pre-schoolers
This study suggests that thinness, rather than excess weight, is associated with decreased light, moderate and high intensity physical activity in Japanese pre-school children
Daily Physical Activity in Japanese Preschool Children Evaluated by Triaxial Accelerometry
The purpose of the present study was to evaluate moderate-to-vigorous physical activity using triaxial accelerometry in Japanese preschool children. The relationship between daily step counts as a convenient measure of physical activity and minutes of engagement in moderate-to-vigorous physical activity was also examined. Physical activity was assessed using a triaxial accelerometer (ActivTracer, GMS) and daily steps using a uniaxial acceleromete…
Reference charts of body proportion for Japanese girls and boys
The new chart provides useful information in the assessment of the body proportions of Japanese children
