Silk Road orientations in Xinjiang archaeology and shifting implications for Eurasian studies
Xinjiang’s location naturally makes it a focal point of the Silk Road (hereafter SR). But considering that for the first 60 years ( circa 1920–1980) of Chinese archaeology—that is, over half of its development—the SR was rarely mentioned in scientific literature, the impact it has had on archaeological studies of Xinjiang remains unclear and poorly understood. With the eponymous Belt and Road Initiative (hereafter BRI) now a decade old and the fi…
Fringe Landscapes
The relationship between nomads and architecture in archaeology is particularly elusive in contexts where a broad spectrum of mobility is evident. Despite growing data on settlement remains in Inner Asia that illustrate a range of subsistence strategies, identifying distinct material evidence of nomadism remains challenging. This article presents the first integrated analysis of Iron Age (first millennium BCE) habitation remains from the Eurasian…
Love isn’t colorblind
Past studies indicate that sociocultural factors may affect who Asian American adults wish to date. To expand upon this burgeoning field of research, the present study examined how internalized racism and resistance and empowerment against racism are associated with Asian American men’s preferences to date four different racial groups of women: Asian women, Black women, Latina women, and White women. The study included a sample of 244 Asian Ameri…

Blue fibers found in dental calculus from Maya sacrificial victims
Surveyed in 2008–2010, the Midnight Terror Cave contains the comingled remains of at least 118 Maya sacrificial victims from the Classic Period (250 CE–925 CE). In order to determine what the victims were consuming, microscopic analysis was carried out on dental calculus. Given the minimal calculus present, calculus from three teeth from one area of the cave (operation V) and three teeth from another area (operation VIII) was each combined to cre…
A Synthesis of the Dibble et al. Controlled Experiments into the Mechanics of Lithic Production
Archaeologists have explored a wide range of topics regarding archaeological stone tools and their connection to past human lifeways through experimentation. Controlled experimentation systematically quantifies the empirical relationships among different flaking variables under a controlled and reproducible setting. This approach offers a platform to generate and test hypotheses about the technological decisions of past knappers from the perspect…

Results of Field Research on Ancient Stonework in the River Valleys of Bortala and Ili in Western Tian Shan (Xinjiang, China)
Ground-level stone structures constructed of unworked or minimally shaped slabs and cobbles are a ubiquitous feature of the archaeological landscape of western Tian Shan. However, little is known about their architecture other than surface morphology, which can appear quite homogeneous. This article presents the latest results of surveys and excavations of selected clusters of Bronze Age stonework from the contiguous Bortala River Valley and Ili …

From Milk and Wool
Ecological and socioeconomic effects of sedentarization campaigns and growing state controls on pastoral practices are a prevalent topic of interest in the study of nomads. Research to date has focused on how processes of industrialization and urbanization bear on the productivity of pasturage and livestock; other constituents of pastoral livelihood, such as secondary animal products, remain less explored. In documenting the making of felt and mi…

Maintaining Self-Rated Health Through Social Comparison in Old Age
When self-related health (SRH) is under threat, people may use self-enhancement through social comparison to buffer against the threat. Because SRH is under greater threat among older than among younger adults, the benefit of social comparison on SRH may be greater for them. To test this, Study 1 examined ratings on physical attributes for self and "someone of the same age" among 592 Hong Kong Chinese, across young, middle, and old age. Findings …
