The impact of offending students’ apologies and perceived sincerity on the physical and emotional distress of victimized teachers
Extant empirical research indicates that teacher victimization is highly prevalent and has detrimental impacts for victimized teachers. Although existing empirical studies have provided valuable information and insights into the prevalence and negative consequences of teacher victimization, to the best of our knowledge, there is no empirical research investigating the impact of apologies from offending students and the perceived sincerity of thos…
When Schools Feel Unsafe
This study investigates the factors influencing perceived unsafety and fear of victimization among middle and high school teachers in Texas. The sample was predominantly female and White/Hispanic, with a mean age of 41 years and varied teaching experience. Results reveal that previous victimization, being female, and signs of environmental disorder are significantly related to higher levels of perceived unsafety and fear. Conversely, administrati…
Aggression against middle and high school teachers
Prior research indicates that student aggression against teachers is widespread, and it has negative impacts on victimized teachers’ emotional and physical well‐being and job performance. However, little is known about the relationship between the recency and duration of victimization and teachers’ thoughts about quitting the teaching profession and related job dissatisfaction and disconnectedness to school. Analyses of data from a longitudinal s…
Gender and General Strain Theory
The present study of 659 Korean adolescents tests General Strain Theory's (GST) utility in explaining gender differences in delinquency causation. It models the effects of key strains, negative emotions, and a composite measure of several conditioning factors separately for boys and girls and for delinquency. Consistent with the theory, males and females experience different strains and different emotions in response, and they vary in influences …
A general theory of crime and computer crime
A Comprehensive Test of General Strain Theory
Using longitudinal data on South Korean youth, the authors addressed limitations of previous tests of general strain theory (GST), focusing on the relationships among key strains, situational- and trait-based negative emotions, conditioning factors, and delinquency. Eight types of strain previously shown most likely to result in delinquency, including delinquency in the South Korean context, were measured. To better understand how trait- and situ…
General strain theory, key strains, and deviance
Stressors, coping resources and strategies, and police stress in South Korea
Driving across campus
Gender Differences in the Effects of Strain on the Delinquency of South Korean Youth
General strain theory (GST) was tested as an explanation of violent and status offense delinquency of South Korean girls and boys. One research objective was to determine whether Korean girls and boys differed in their experience of each type of strain and in the levels of conditioning effects that might moderate the connections of strain to delinquency. Another objective was to identify gender differences in the effects of different types of str…
Korean police officers' attitude toward the efficacy of mini-police stations
The reasons for choosing a career in policing among South Korean police cadets
Adaptation of Theory for Alternative Cultural Contexts
To model the relationship between strains and delinquency in a non-Western national context, the present study integrated information on adolescence in South Korea with prior theoretical and empirical work on general strain theory (GST) to explain delinquency. The sample included just under 400 adolescents in technical and college preparatory high schools in South Korea. Two types of strain, examination related strain and emotional and physical a…
