  • Weak pairwise justifiability as a common root of Arrow’s and the Gibbard–Satterthwaite theorems

Open Access•Salvador Barberà, Dolors Berga et al.•ARTICLE•Social Choice and Welfare•2025

We introduce a novel principle that we call weak pairwise justifiability, which applies to a large class of collective choice rules, including the social choice functions and the social welfare functions about which the Gibbard–Satterthwaite theorem and Arrow’s impossibility theorem are predicated, respectively. We prove that, under appropriate qualifications, our principle is a common root for these two classical results, when applied to rules d…

  • Corruption and extremism

Open Access•Attila Gáspár, Tommaso Giommoni et al.•ARTICLE•Journal of Development Economics•2025•Referências: 10

This paper shows that corruption generates extremism, but mainly on the opposition side. While corruption hurts all citizens, only voters on the minority side may desire to switch to a more extreme representative when they perceive a more corrupt political system. In our model, campaigning on a corruption scandal against the incumbent gives a higher winningprobability for the opposition politician but simultaneously reduces expected future rents …

Open Access•Stefano Comino, Giovanni Mastrobuoni et al.•ARTICLE•Journal of Policy Analysis and…•2020•Citada por: 7•Referências: 3

Do undocumented migrants underreport crimes to the police in order to avoid being deported? And do criminals exploit such vulnerability? We address these questions using victimization surveys and administrative data around the 1986 U.S. immigration amnesty. The amnesty allows us to solve two major identification issues that have plagued this literature: migrants’ legal status is endogenous and unobserved. The results show that the reporting rate …

  • Elections and Deceptions

Open Access•Luca Corazzini, Sebastian Kube et al.•ARTICLE•American Journal of Political…•2014•Citada por: 25•Referências: 72

Traditionally, the virtue of democratic elections has been seen in their role as means of screening and sanctioning shirking public officials. This article proposes a novel rationale for elections and political campaigns considering that candidates incur psychological costs of lying, in particular from breaking campaign promises. These nonpecuniary costs imply that campaigns influence subsequent behavior, even in the absence of reputational or im…
