  • Incidental news exposure via social media and political participation

    Open Access•Sangwon Lee, Michael A Xenos et al.•ARTICLE•New Media & Society•2020•Citada por: 15•Referências: 15

The aim of this study is to investigate the causal direction of the relationship between incidental news exposure via social media and political participation. Unlike prior studies, which have relied on cross-sectional data to examine this link, we used two panel data sets to better identify causal relationships. Specifically, we evaluate two unidirectional models (i.e. mobilization and reinforcement) and a reciprocal causal model using both cros…

  • Social distraction? Social media use and political knowledge in two U.S. Presidential elections

Open Access•Sangwon Lee, Michael A Xenos et al.•ARTICLE•Computers in Human Behavior•2019

  • Politicians, celebrities and social media

    Nathan Manning, Ruth Penfold-Mounce et al.•ARTICLE•Journal of Youth Studies•2016•Citada por: 23•Referências: 13

With electoral politics no longer organised by social class, politicians increasingly seek to relate to a broad spectrum of citizens and part of their relatability is conjured through more casual, informal performances aimed at cultivating authenticity. The various platforms of social media promote forms of authentic communication by blurring the public/private divide, creating ‘spontaneous’ and instant access to ‘real life’. This article seeks t…

  • The great equalizer? Patterns of social media use and youth political engagement in three advanced democracies

Michael A Xenos, Michael Xenos et al.•ARTICLE•Information Communication & Society•2014

Recent developments suggest a strong relationship between social media use and political engagement and raise questions about the potential for social media to help stem or even reverse patterns of political inequality that have troubled scholars for years. In this paper, we articulate a model of social media and political engagement among young people, and test it using data from representative samples of young people in Australia, the USA, and …

  • Coverage of emerging technologies

    Open Access•Michael A Cacciatore, Andrew A Anderson et al.•ARTICLE•New Media & Society•2012•Citada por: 16•Referências: 19

This study explores differences in volume of coverage and thematic content between US print news and online media coverage for an emerging technology – nanotechnology. We found that while American print news media and Google News coverage of this emerging technology has peaked and started to decline, Google Blog Search coverage of nanotechnology is still growing. Additionally, our data show discrepancies in thematic content of online and print ne…

  • Narratives and Network Organization

    Open Access•W L Bennett, K Foot et al.•ARTICLE•Journal of Communication•2011

The narratives that flow through networks can shed light on their organization. This analysis looks at the elaboration of fair trade networks in the United States and the United Kingdom, with a focus on the narrative control exercised by key gatekeeping organizations. Structural properties of the 2 networks reflect differences in centralization as measured through distance, closeness, and betweenness in relations among organizations. The analysis…

  • Of Attitudes and Engagement

Open Access•John Gastil, Michael A Xenos et al.•ARTICLE•Journal of Communication•2010

In this essay, we draw on broader psychological theories of the attitude–behavior relationship to postulate specific reciprocal patterns of causality between the civic attitudes and forms of political and civic engagement featured in contemporary political communication research. We then examine the extent of these reciprocal relationships with a 2-wave panel survey of 2,872 Pacific Northwest residents. Spanning the 2004 elections, structural equ…

  • Civic Life Online

    Open Access•Luisa Doldi, K Foot et al.•ARTICLE•Online Information Review•2009

The relationship of participation in online communities to civic and political engagement.Young people today have grown up living substantial portions of their lives online, seeking entertainment, social relationships, and a place to express themselves. It is clear that participation in online communities is important for many young people, but less clear how this translates into civic or political engagement. This volume examines the relationshi…

  • New Mediated Deliberation

    Open Access•Michael A Xenos, Michael Xenos•ARTICLE•Journal of Computer-Mediated…•2008•Citada por: 11•Referências: 12

This study explores the implications of political weblogs for theories of mediated public deliberation. Guided by contemporary questions surrounding the internet and the public sphere, we examine blog and newspaper coverage of the nomination and confirmation to the U.S. Supreme Court of Samuel Alito with an eye toward further development of theories of mass deliberation. Specifically, we pursue questions concerning volume of coverage, ideological…

  • The Disconnection In Online Politics

Michael A Xenos, Michael Xenos et al.•ARTICLE•Information Communication & Society•2007

In recent years, candidates and other political actors have dramatically increased their presence and activities online. Although the notion of these activities reaching beyond a limited set of early-adopters is relatively new, younger citizens have long been at the forefront of new developments on the web and continue to make up a substantial proportion of those seeking political information online. Given longstanding concern over levels of civi…

  • Direct and Differential Effects of the Internet on Political and Civic Engagement

Open Access•Michael A Xenos, Michael Xenos et al.•ARTICLE•Journal of Communication•2007

Given the significant rise in the number of Americans who turn to the Internet for political information, we examine the effects of these behaviors on political and civic engagement in an evolving media landscape. Specifically, we test hypotheses derived from competing models—the instrumental approach, which posits direct effects of Internet use and a psychological approach, which predicts contingent effects. Analyses of the 2004 American Nationa…

  • Analyzing Linking Practices

    Open Access•K Foot, Steven M Schneider et al.•ARTICLE•Journal of Computer-Mediated…•2006•Citada por: 18•Referências: 14

This article offers preliminary insights and a possible empirical model for managing the conceptual, methodological, and technological challenges entailed in developmental analysis of link-mediated relations. We offer a “mid-range” approach to making sense of linking practices, midway between close rhetorical/ethnographic analysis of links and large-scale link mapping. We suggest that systematic human coding and interpretation of linked-to produc…

  • Dimensional Reduction of Word-Frequency Data as a Substitute for Intersubjective Content Analysis

    Open Access•Adam F Simon, Michael A Xenos et al.•ARTICLE•Political Analysis•2004•Citada por: 17•Referências: 18

This paper presents a method for using dimensional reduction in the analysis of political content. We draw inspiration from latent semantic analysis (LSA) theory, which posits that factor analysis can successfully model human language. We suggest that the factor analysis of word frequencies generated from any political text—for example, open-ended survey responses—provides adequate content analysis categories and can substitute for more commonly …
