    Open Access•Josh Mccrain, Stephen D O''Connell•ARTICLE•Political Science Research and…•2023•Citada por: 4•Referências: 53

More than half of the current members of the US Congress served in their state legislature prior to holding federal office. We quantify the relationship between state legislative service and career progression to Congress. Using close elections for exogenous assignment of political experience across otherwise similar candidates, we show that serving in the state legislature more than doubles an individual's probability of eventually contesting a …

  • The impact of a health facility construction campaign on health service utilisation and outcomes

Open Access•Kevin Croke, Andualem Telaye Mengistu et al.•ARTICLE•BMJ Global Health•2020

BACKGROUND: Access to health facilities in many low-income and middle-income countries remains low, with a strong association between individuals' distance to facilities and health outcomes. Yet plausibly causal estimates of the effects of facility construction programmes are rare. Starting in 2004, more than 2800 government health facilities were built in Ethiopia. This study estimates the impact of this programme on maternal health service util…

  • Can Quotas Increase the Supply of Candidates for Higher-Level Positions? Evidence from Local Government in India

    Stephen D O''Connell, Stephen D O'Connell•ARTICLE•The Review of Economics and…•2020

A one-third quota rule for women in local political leadership seats in India increases the number of female candidates who later contest seats in state and national legislatures. This arises from the candidacy of beneficiaries who gained political experience due to the quotas and career politicians who continue contesting in longer-exposed areas. The policy accounts for a substantial portion of the increase in female candidates for high office s…

  • Economy-wide and Sectoral Impacts on Workers of Brazil’s Internet Rollout

Mark A Dutz, Lucas Ferreira Mation et al.•ARTICLE•Forum for Social Economics•2017•Citada por: 2•Referências: 1

We study the effect of Brazil’s staggered Internet rollout between 2000 and 2014 on municipality employment and wages. We use a new annual data-set on Internet availability from the Brazil school census, with the assumption that the share of schools that have Internet access in each municipality reflects general accessibility of Internet connections. We combine these data with Brazil’s rich matched employer–employee survey (RAIS), which contains …

  • On Measuring and Reducing Selection Bias With a Quasi‐Doubly Randomized Preference Trial

Open Access•Ted Joyce, Dahlia K Remler et al.•ARTICLE•Journal of Policy Analysis and…•2017•Referências: 1

Randomized experiments provide unbiased estimates of treatment effects, but are costly and time consuming. We demonstrate how a randomized experiment can be leveraged to measure selection bias by conducting a subsequent observational study that is identical in every way except that subjects choose their treatment—a quasi‐doubly randomized preference trial (quasi‐DRPT). Researchers first strive to think of and measure all possible confounders and …

  • Local industrial structures and female entrepreneurship in India

Ejaz Ghani, William R Kerr et al.•ARTICLE•Journal of Economic Geography•2013•Citada por: 3•Referências: 10

We analyze the spatial determinants of female entrepreneurship in India in the manufacturing and services sectors. We focus on the presence of incumbent female-owned businesses and their role in promoting higher subsequent female entrepre-neurship relative to male entrepreneurship. We find evidence of agglomeration economies in both sectors, where higher female ownership among incumbent businesses within a district-industry predicts that a greate…

Ghani E., Kerr W. R. and O'Connell S. Spatial determinants of entrepreneurship in India, Regional Studies. The spatial determinants of entrepreneurship in India in the manufacturing and services sectors are analysed. Among general district traits, the quality of the physical infrastructure and workforce education are the strongest predictors of entry, with labour laws and household banking access also playing important roles. Extensive evidence i…

  • How Do Electricity Shortages Affect Industry? Evidence from India

Hunt Allcott, Allan Collard‐Wexler et al.

We estimate the effects of electricity shortages on Indian manufacturers, instrumenting with supply shifts from hydroelectric power availability. We estimate that India's average reported level of shortages reduces the average plant's revenues and producer surplus by 5 to 10 percent, but average productivity losses are significantly smaller because most inputs can be stored during outages. Shortages distort the plant size distribution, as there a…
