  • Humanitarian Aid, Genocide, and Mass Killings

    Open Access•Donald W Beachler•ARTICLE•Holocaust and Genocide Studies•2019

In this concise and insightful volume, Jean-Hervé Bradol and Marc Le Pape analyze the role of the aid organization Medicins San Frontieres (MSF) during the fifteen-year period that encompasses the era of the Rwandan genocide. Designed as a study of MSF in Rwanda from 1982 to 1997, the book also offers an analysis of the challenges humanitarian agencies face in situations of genocidal violence. Still, it should prove of interest to those concerned…

  • The Quest for Justice in Cambodia

    Open Access•Donald W Beachler•ARTICLE•Genocide Studies and Prevention•2014•Referências: 1

The trial of the four surviving senior members of the Khmer Rouge leadership was a difficult undertaking from the start. The elderly defendants were in frail health. Illness and death reduced the number of the accused to just two. The Cambodian government, led by Hun Sen, was not eager to have any trials at all, and was determined that the trial not implicate officials who were now allied with the ruling regime. The conflicting agendas of the int…

  • Barack Obama and the South

    Donald W Beachler•ARTICLE•Patterns of Prejudice•2011

Barack Obama was more successful in the South in the 2008 election than many previous Democratic presidential nominees had been. While John McCain continued Republican dominance in the conservative region, it was a major breakthrough for a northern liberal Democrat, especially an African American from Illinois, to win three southern states and secure 55 electoral votes. Florida, North Carolina and Virginia were good opportunities for Obama becaus…

  • Arguing about Cambodia

    Donald W Beachler•ARTICLE•Holocaust and Genocide Studies•2009•Citada por: 8•Referências: 15

From the time the Khmer Rouge seized power in April 1975, people have argued over the actions and intentions of the communist regime in Cambodia. During the years following the revolution, scholars and journalists debated allegations that the Khmer Rouge was committing genocide. Even after communist Vietnam toppled the neighboring regime, debate remained fierce. Much of the positioning by academics, publicists, and politicians seems to have been …

  • The politics of genocide scholarship

    Donald W Beachler, Donald Beachler•ARTICLE•Patterns of Prejudice•2007•Citada por: 5•Referências: 2

The massive communal violence that occurred in East Pakistan in 1971 received worldwide attention at the time, but has been largely ignored since. Some scholars and other writers have denied that what took place in Bangladesh was a genocide. Journalists' reports, expatriate testimony, refugee reports and an investigation by the International Commission of Jurists in 1972 all indicate, however, that the Pakistani army did commit genocide in Bangla…

  • The South

    Open Access•Donald W Beachler•CHAPTER•Winning the White House 2004•2005

The 2004 election continued the recent pattern of Republican dominance of the politics of the American South. For the second straight election, George W. Bush carried all 13 southern states and consequently received all of the region’s electoral votes. In 2000 and 2004, Bush won all the southern states despite the fact that a southerner, Al Gore of Tennessee, headed the Democratic ticket in 2000 and North Carolina Senator John Edwards was the Dem…

  • Militias and Segregationists

    Donald W Beachler•ARTICLE•Polity•2003

Groups such as armed militias and segregationists are often regarded as irrelevant to electoral politics in the United States. The very low rates of voter participation in the U.S. create incentives for politicians to mobilize extremist groups. Such mobilization must be done in a selective and discrete manner. The relationship between certain Republican politicians and extremist organizations is explored in this article

  • All About Race? Electoral Politics in Mississippi

    Open Access•Donald W Beachler•ARTICLE•Politics & Policy•2001•Citada por: 2•Referências: 8

This article examines the degree to which county level voting patterns in Mississippi, the state with the largest African American population, are a function of race. It also tests V.O. Key's racial threat hypothesis in the context of Democratic and Republican general election contests in the state. Race remains the most important variable in explaining county level voting patterns in Mississippi. It is not, however, the only important variable i…
