Influence of the Covid-19 pandemic on chronic disease management among indigenous people in Canada
Introduction In Canada, little is known about how the Coronavirus-19 (COVID-19) pandemic has influenced Indigenous people with chronic disease. Even without the additional burden of the pandemic, many Indigenous communities lack access to high-quality health care and preventive measures. This study examines the impact of the COVID-19 pandemic on chronic disease management (CDM) and healthcare access and utilization by describing the CDM experienc…
Opioid Initiation in Older Patients with Chronic Pain Who Received Authorized Cannabis Prescription
BACKGROUND: Cannabis is being increasingly used to treat chronic pain, with studies suggesting that concurrent use with opioids may reduce the need for opioid medications. However, specific to opioid-naïve patients, the effects of cannabis exposure on opioid initiation are not well known. OBJECTIVE: To assess the association between the authorized prescription of cannabis and opioid initiation in older patients with chronic pain. STUDY DESIGN: We…
Becoming Invisible
Young adulthood is a critical period for identity formation, yet young adults with mental health–related disabilities often engage with care systems that erode rather than support selfhood. This qualitative study draws on critical realist metatheory, which aligns with interpretive inquiry while enabling layered explanation. Conducted in partnership with young adult co-researchers with lived experience of mental health–related disabilities from eq…
Navigating the “crossroads”
This article navigates the critical crossroads facing contemporary social work, characterized by the schism between the “Empirical Highway” and “Postmodern/Critical Off-Ramp.” By exploring the evolution of scientific thought and its influence on social work—noting the adage that those who do not learn from history are doomed to repeat it, the article advocates for critical realism. This promising metatheory offers a “middle path,” avoiding the we…
Substance use patterns among individuals with problematic pornography use
Pornography consumption is a highly prevalent behavior in developed countries, with studies indicating that up to 70% of men and 40% of women have viewed pornography within the past year. Substance use in individuals with problematic pornography use (PPU) is an area that warrants further investigation due to the potential for its compounded negative effects including risk for addiction and potential negative effects on mental and emotional health…

The Association of Medical Cannabis Use with Pain Levels and Opioid Use in Illinois’ Opioid Alternative Pilot Program
Objective The state of Illinois’ Opioid Alternative Pilot Program (OAPP) is the first and only official harm-reduction program in the US to address the opioid crisis via facilitation of safe and legal access to medical cannabis. This study evaluates the association of medical cannabis use with pain level and frequency of opioid use in the first cohort of OAPP participants in 2019.Methods A survey was sent OAPP enrollees between February and July …
Benzodiazepine use in medical cannabis authorization adult patients from 2013 to 2021
Medical cannabis authorization had little to no effect on benzodiazepine usage among patients prescribed regular benzodiazepine treatment in Alberta, Canada. • Further clinical research is needed to investigate the potential impact of medical cannabis as an alternative to benzodiazepine medication
Incidence and Predictors of Cannabis-Related Poisoning and Mental and Behavioral Disorders among Patients with Medical Cannabis Authorization
OBJECTIVE: As medical cannabis use increases in North America, establishing its safety profile is a priority. The objective of this study was to assess rates of emergency department (ED) visits and hospitalizations due to poisoning by cannabis, and cannabis-related mental health disorders among medically authorized cannabis patients in Ontario, Canada, between 2014 and 2017. METHODS: This is a retrospective cohort study of patients who received m…

Men’s Physical Activity and Sleep Following a Workplace Health Intervention
The workplace provides an important delivery point for health promotion, yet many programs fail to engage men. A gender-sensitive 8-week team challenge-based intervention targeting increased physical activity was delivered at a petrochemical worksite. The purpose of this study was to examine men’s pre–post physical activity and sleep following the intervention, as well as to explore program acceptability and gather men’s recommendations for healt…
Opioid use in medical cannabis authorization adult patients from 2013 to 2018
This short-term study found that medical cannabis authorization showed intermediate effects on opioid use, which was dependent on initial opioid use. Greater observations of changes in OME appear to be in those patients who were on a high dosage of opioids (OME > 100); however, continued surveillance of patients utilizing both opioids and medical cannabis is warranted by clinicians to understand the long-term potential benefits and any harms of o…
Changes in patient health questionnaire (PHQ-9) scores in adults with medical authorization for cannabis
Although the majority showed no clinically important changes in PHQ-9 scores, a number of patients showed improvement or deteriorations in PHQ-9 scores. Future studies should focus on the parallel use of screening questionnaires to control for PHQ-9 sensitivity and to explore potential factors that may have attributed to the improvement in scores pre- and post- 3-6 month time period
Cohort study of medical cannabis authorisation and healthcare utilisation in 2014–2017 in Ontario, Canada
BACKGROUND: The impact of medical cannabis on healthcare utilisation between 2014 and 2017 in Ontario, Canada. With cannabis legalisation in Canada and some states in the USA, high-quality longitudinal cohort research studies are of urgent need to assess the impact of cannabis use on healthcare utilisation. METHODS: A matched cohort study of 9925 medical cannabis authorised adult patients (inhaled (smoked or vaporised) or orally consumed (oils)) …
Correlates of General and Domain-Specific Sitting Time among Older Adults
Older adults reported low levels of sitting time. Different correlates emerged for the employed and unemployed samples across sitting domains
Multiple-domain Versus Single-domain Measurements of Socioeconomic Status (SES) for Predicting Nonadherence to Statin Medications
INTRODUCTION: Low socioeconomic status (SES) should be a robust predictor of medication nonadherence because it shares key features with the theoretical origins of this phenomenon. However, population-based studies have demonstrated weak associations overall, possibly because SES is inadequately represented. We compared the performance of multiple versus single-domain measures of SES as predictors of statin adherence. METHODS: This retrospective …
The Interplay Between Continuity of Care, Multimorbidity, and Adverse Events in Patients With Diabetes
OBJECTIVES: To evaluate the impact of continuity of care and multimorbidity on health outcomes in patients with diabetes. RESEARCH DESIGN: Using a US claims database of insured patients, we identified those with incident diabetes between 2004 and 2008 and followed them until death, disenrollment, or December 31, 2010. Continuity of care was defined using Breslau's Usual Provider of Continuity (UPC; proportion of visits to the usual or predominant…
Associations of Daily Pedometer Steps and Self-Reported Physical Activity With Health-Related Quality of Life
Older adults exceeding established step thresholds reported significantly higher HRQoL indices compared with those achieving lower thresholds
Utility of telephone survey methods in population-based health studies of older adults
Older adults are willing to participate in telephone-based health surveys when randomly contacted. Researchers can use this information to evaluate the feasibility and the logistics of planned studies using a similar population and study design
Changes in Thiazolidinedione Use and Outcomes Following Removal of a Prior-authorization Policy
OBJECTIVE: The aim of this study was to assess the impact of removing prior-authorization restrictions on the use of thiazolidinediones (TZDs) and outcomes. METHODS: In a controlled interrupted time-series analysis, whereby new users of antidiabetic agents over 65 years of age in adjacent Canadian provinces with different TZD-related policies [Alberta (n = 16,653) and Saskatchewan (n = 6682)] were followed from January 2001 to December 2006. Prio…
