Empirical Studies in Institutional Change
Empirical Studies in Institutional Change is a collection of nine empirical studies by fourteen scholars. Dealing with issues ranging from the evolution of secure markets in seventeenth-century England to the origins of property rights in airport slots in modern America, the contributors analyse institutions and institutional change in various parts of the world and at various periods of time. The volume is a contribution to the new economics of …
The evolution of property rights
In her path-breaking work, Elinor Ostrom provides theoretical and empirical evidence suggesting that individuals often overcome the problem of collective action and arrange privately for the provision and allocation of public goods, including informal property rights. Ostrom has also found that local experimentation and self-governance often produce more effective results than rulemaking by the state. In his Coase Theorem, Ronald Coase arrives at…

An Analytic Revolution in Comparative Politics
Over the last decade rational choice and formal theory have gained increasing prominence in comparative politics, portending a potential analytic revolution in the field. Like the behavioral revolution of the 1960s, the analytic revolution of the 1990s is motivated in part by the desire to make comparative politics more rigorous by utilizing analytical tools such as game theory and spatial models developed largely by economists and positivist sch…
State reforms and the theory of institutional policy
A theory of institutional reforms must recognize what policy instruments are available, how politics restrains the choice sets of reformers, and whether spontaneous counter-policy by ordinary actors is likely to undermine reforms. A discussion of the so-called Determinacy Paradox concludes that it is not a practical issue. Insights suggested by the new institutionalism include measures to reduce political risks, increase the durability of reforms…

Determinants of Icelandic Foreign Relations
It is the thesis of this paper that the major determinants of Icelandic foreign relations can be classified under three headings: population, economic geography, and geographic location. The thesis is spelled out in some detail, and the fundamental goals of Ice land's foreign policy are presented as an interplay of these determinants. Finally, the country's foreign policy in three major areas - national security, European integration and the fish…
