Engaging in a dialogue with the Luton Roma community on access to healthcare services and co-producing solutions
Background: Luton, a super-diverse town in the East of England, is home to one of the largest Roma populations in the UK. Roma communities experience significant health inequalities, particularly in accessing healthcare services, contributing to poorer health outcomes. However, there is limited research on effective ways to engage Roma communities and address these disparities. This study aimed to explore the views of the Luton Roma community on …
Temporal patterns of gut microbiota in lemurs ( Eulemur rubriventer ) living in intact and disturbed habitats in a novel sample type
The gut microbiome is a plastic phenotype; gut microbial composition is highly variable across an individual host's lifetime and between host social groups, and this variation has consequences for host health. However, we do not yet fully understand how longitudinal microbial dynamics and their social drivers may be influenced by ecological stressors, such as habitat degradation. Answering these questions is difficult in most wild animal systems,…
Exploring socio-ecological factors that influence the use of urban greenspace
Urban greenspaces are considered an important health asset associated with improved population health and well-being. However, inequalities in access to and use of the outdoors continue to exist, particularly among low-income and minority ethnic populations. Following a socio-ecological approach, this study aimed to investigate the individual, interpersonal, and environmental factors that influence the use of greenspaces among an ethnically diver…

Community readiness to address disparities in access to cancer, palliative and end-of-life care for ethnic minorities
The Community Readiness Model provides an insight into the community's position regarding disparities in access to cancer, palliative and end-of-life services. In order to ensure that continuing efforts are successful in addressing existing inequalities rather than exacerbating them, this study emphasises how critical it is to evaluate the readiness of the community in order to avoid widening inequalities in access and use of services
Knowledge, perceived risk, and attitudes towards Covid-19 protective measures amongst ethnic minorities in the UK
Background Minority ethnic groups are at increased risk of COVID-19 related mortality or morbidity yet continue to have a disproportionally lower uptake of the vaccine. The importance of adherence to prevention and control measures to keep vulnerable populations and their families safe therefore remains crucial. This research sought to examine the knowledge, perceived risk, and attitudes toward COVID-19 among an ethnically diverse community. Meth…
Examining the influences on the use of behavioural science within UK local authority public health

Methods: = 13 female) in the south of England participated in semi-structured interviews, which were analysed inducti…
Improving support for breastfeeding mothers
The findings presented inform important recommendations for the design and implementation of future programs and interventions targeted at reducing breastfeeding inequalities. Interventions should focus on providing mothers practical support and reassurance not only during the early stages but throughout their breastfeeding journey. The findings also highlight the need for tailoring services to support diverse communities which acknowledge differ…
Parents’ experiences of complementary feeding among a United Kingdom culturally diverse and deprived community
Complementary feeding practices and adherence to health recommendations are influenced by a range of different and often interrelating factors such as socio-economic and cultural factors. However, the factors underlying these associations are often complex with less awareness of how complementary feeding approaches vary across the UK's diverse population. This paper describes a qualitative investigation undertaken in a deprived and culturally div…
Exploring factors that impact the decision to use assistive telecare
In the United Kingdom (UK), an ageing population met with the reduction of social care funding has led to reduced support for older people marked with an increased demand on family care-givers. Assistive telecare (AT) devices are viewed as an innovative and effective way to support older people. However, there is limited research which has explored adoption of AT from the perspectives of family care-givers. In-depth, semi-structured interviews we…
Who uses NHS health checks? Investigating the impact of ethnicity and gender and method of invitation on uptake of NHS health checks
The findings revealed that different invitation methods were effective for different ethnic and gender groups. Therefore, it is suggested that established protocols of invitation are specifically designed for maximizing the response rate for each population group. Future research should now focus on uncovering the barriers to uptake in particular culturally diverse population groups to determine how public health teams can better engage with thes…
Who uses NHS Direct? Investigating the impact of ethnicity on the uptake of telephone based healthcare
Findings support previous research suggesting a variation in usage of NHS Direct influenced by ethnicity, which is evidenced on a national level. Further research is now required to examine the underlying barriers that contribute to the ethnic variation in uptake of this service
