The article analyzes the use of the Cyrillic letter Ð3 and the Latin grapheme g in the early written records of the Mari language. The letter g was first used alongside the letter Ð3 in the Cheremis grammar of 1775. In the grammar, the letter g is used more frequently than its variant Ð3. The article examines the research activities of Aleksej Kantserovskij, teacher of the Kazan Theological Seminary. In addition to the main teaching job he was engaged in scientific work compiling a Mari-Russian dictionary. Unfortunately, the monument remained in handwritten form. The dictionary presents the vocabulary of Meadow Mari and Hill Mari. In addition, the lexicographic work contains a brief comparative grammar for both varieties
