  • Mapping Abundance for a Planetary Future

Joy Miller, J Philip Miller•ARTICLE•Journal of American Ethnic History•2025

  • Maternal prenatal social disadvantage and neonatal functional connectivity

    Open Access•Max P Herzberg, Ashley N Nielsen et al.•ARTICLE•Developmental Psychology•2024

Recent research has reported effects of socioeconomic status on neurobehavioral development as early as infancy, including positive associations between income and brain structure, functional connectivity, and behavior later in childhood (Ramphal, Whalen, et al., 2020; Triplett et al., 2022). This study extends this literature by investigating the relation of maternal prenatal social disadvantage (PSD) to neonatal amygdala and hippocampus functio…

  • Alcohol Prevention in Urgent and Emergency Care (Apuec)

Open Access•Harry Blake, Emma J Adams et al.•ARTICLE•International Journal of…•2023

Excessive alcohol consumption carries a significant health, social and economic burden. Screening, brief intervention and referral to treatment (SBIRT) is one approach to identifying patients with excessive alcohol consumption and providing interventions to help them reduce their drinking. However, healthcare workers in urgent and emergency care settings do not routinely integrate SBIRT into clinical practice and raise a lack of training as a bar…

  • Taoism, Teaching, and Learning

    Open Access•John P Miller, J Philip Miller•BOOK•Taoism, Teaching, and Learning•2022

A Nature-Based Approach to EducationThe ancient Chinese philosophy of Taoism contains profound wisdom about the cosmos, nature, human life, and education.Taoism seeks to be in harmony with nature, and using it as a guide can help us live in a way that is healing to both ourselves and the planet.Taoism, Teaching, and Learning identifies key aspects of Taoist thought and highlights how these principles can promote a holistic approach to teaching an…

  • Differential Sphingosine-1-Phosphate Receptor-1 Protein Expression in the Dorsolateral Prefrontal Cortex Between Schizophrenia Type 1 and Type 2

Open Access•Ganesh B Chand, Hao Jiang et al.•ARTICLE•Frontiers in Psychiatry•2022

Understanding the etiology and treatment approaches in schizophrenia is challenged in part by the heterogeneity of this disorder. One encouraging progress is the growing evidence that there are subtypes of schizophrenia. Recent in vitro findings of messenger ribonucleic acid (mRNA) gene expression on postmortem dorsolateral prefrontal cortex (DLPFC) showed that schizophrenia has two subtypes, those with a relatively normal DLPFC transcriptome (Ty…

  • Observer ratings of neighborhoods

    Open Access•Elena M Andresen, Theodore K Malmstrom et al.•ARTICLE•BMC Public Health•2013

Enhanced field protocols and rater training did not improve measurement quality. Specifically, retest reliability and interviewer variability remained problematic. Measurement error partially reduced, but did not eliminate concurrent validity, suggesting there are robust associations between neighborhood characteristics and health outcomes. We conclude that the 5-item AAH NAS has sufficient reliability and validity for further use. Additional res…

  • Association Between Childhood School Segregation and Changes in Adult Sense of Control in the African American Health Cohort

    Fredric D Wolinsky, Theodore K Malmstrom et al.•ARTICLE•The Journals of Gerontology…•2013•Citada por: 1•Referências: 6

AAH participants receiving the majority of their primary and secondary educations in segregated schools appeared to have been protected, in part, from age-related declines in the sense of control

  • Childhood school segregation and later life sense of control and physical performance in the African American Health cohort

    Open Access•Fredric D Wolinsky, Elena M Andresen et al.•ARTICLE•BMC Public Health•2012

Childhood school desegregation was adversely associated with the sense of control of African Americans in later life, and this reduced sense of control appears, in part, to account for their poorer physical performance. The etiologic mechanism through which childhood school segregation at the time that this cohort experienced it improved the sense of control in later life, which subsequently led to better physical performance, has not been identi…

  • Neighborhood conditions, diabetes, and risk of lower-body functional limitations among middle-aged African Americans

Open Access•Mario Schootman, Elena M Andresen et al.•ARTICLE•BMC Public Health•2010

Adverse neighborhood conditions appear to exacerbate the detrimental effects on lower-body functioning associated with diabetes

  • Predictors of Change in Grip Strength Over 3 Years in the African American Health Project

Results can be used to design interventions to improve strength outcomes

  • Three-Year Measured Weight Change in the African American Health Study

    Open Access•Fredric D Wolinsky, Elena M Andresen et al.•ARTICLE•Journal of Aging and Health•2009•Referências: 2

Objective: This study examines 3-year weight change in African Americans. Method: Nine hundred and ninety-eight participants 49 to 65 years old were assessed at baseline and 3 years later. Weight was measured, and weight change was defined as clinically meaningful increases or decreases (± 5 kg). Potential risk factors were investigated using multinomial logistic regression. Results: In-home measured weights were available for 752 participants (7…

  • Antecedents of Global Decline in Health-Related Quality of Life Among Middle-Aged African Americans

    Fredric D Wolinsky, Theodore K Malmstrom et al.•ARTICLE•The Journals of Gerontology…•2009•Referências: 4

Although these risk factors are for the most part nonmalleable, they can serve as markers of impending global HRQoL declines among late-middle-aged African Americans

  • Rating neighborhoods for older adult health

    Open Access•Elena M Andresen, Theodore K Malmstrom et al.•ARTICLE•BMC Public Health•2008

Observer ratings show promise in understanding the effect of neighborhood on health outcomes. The AAH Neighborhood Assessment Scale and other rating systems should be tested further in diverse settings

  • Self-Rated Health

    Open Access•Fredric D Wolinsky, Thomas R Miller et al.•ARTICLE•Journal of Aging and Health•2007•Citada por: 8•Referências: 7

The decline in SRH levels among 49- to 65-year-old African Americans is comparable to that of Whites

  • Neighbourhood environment and the incidence of depressive symptoms among middle-aged African Americans

    Mario Schootman, E M Andresen et al.•ARTICLE•Journal of Epidemiology and…•2007•Citada por: 2•Referências: 38

Aim: To investigate the association between attributes of subject location and incidence of clinically relevant levels of depressive symptoms (CRLDS), and to investigate whether an association remained after adjusting for individual-level factors using data from the population-based African American Health Study. Methods: An 11-item depression scale (Center for Epidemiologic Studies Depression scale) was obtained at baseline and 3 years later thr…

    Fredric D Wolinsky, Douglas K Miller et al.•ARTICLE•The Journals of Gerontology…•2005•Citada por: 2•Referências: 1

The subclinical status measures were the main predictors of the onset of difficulty in all tasks and functions 1-2 years later. Interventions to reduce frailty should focus on self-reported subclinical status as an early warning system

  • Health-Related Quality of Life in Middle-Aged African Americans

    Open Access•Fredric D Wolinsky, D K Miller et al.•ARTICLE•The Journals of Gerontology…•2004•Citada por: 9•Referências: 7

The SF-36 is a reliable and valid measure of HRQoL for use with African Americans. In this sample, the HRQoL was below national averages. Future social epidemiologic studies should include grip strength, vision, and hearing assessments, which had substantial and consistent associations with the SF-36 scale scores

  • Post-Apocalyptic Hoping

    Jim Miller, J Philip Miller•ARTICLE•Science Fiction Studies•1998

In this essay I argue that Octavia Butler’s work provides fine examples of what Tom Moylan has called the “critical dystopia, ” a narrative which points to the socio-historic causes of the dystopian elements of our culture rather than one which merely reveals symptoms. Butler works through the dystopian elements of the culture and then seeks to create new myths for the postmodern age. She does not offer a full-blown utopian “blueprint” in her wor…

  • Uncertainty About the Persistence of Economic Shocks

John P Miller, J Philip Miller et al.•ARTICLE•Journal of Business and Economic…•1995

The behavior of time series of economic output has been characterized in terms of the persistence of shocks. For a series generated by an autoregressive integrated moving average model, persistence is a function of the model parameters. We demonstrate that a careful analysis, based on the likelihood, can lead to considerably more uncertainty about persistence than is implied by the confidence intervals that are usually calculated. We examine also…

  • Visual Acuity, Visual Disabilities and Falling in the Elderly

    Open Access•Cynthia L Arfken, Helen W Lach et al.•ARTICLE•Journal of Aging and Health•1994•Referências: 2

Poor vision has been suggested as a risk factor for falling in the elderly. We analyzed the findings from a cohort of community-dwelling elderly (N = 875) to determine the relative risks for impaired visual acuity and various visual disabilities with falling, recurrent falling, and serious injurious falls. The prevalences of impaired visual acuity and four visual disabilities were low. None of the vision variables examined predicted time to first…

  • Social-Psychological Implications of Weber's Model of Bureaucracy

    Jon Miller, J Philip Miller•ARTICLE•Social Forces•1970•Citada por: 7•Referências: 11

A social-psychological formulation of Weber's model of bureaucracy is offered which emphasizes close connections among expertise, control, authority, and legitimacy. Structured and sociometric questions are used to develop ordinal measures of these four variables and the relationships are tested among the individuals in a public school system. In general the relationships are confirmed, indicating that Weber's model is useful as a source of gener…

  • Marxism and Subjectivity Remarks on Georg Lukacs and Existential Phenomenology

    J Miller, J Philip Miller•ARTICLE•Telos•1970

Sartre has written that “the theory of knowledge continues to be the weak point in Marxism”. The implications of this statement go beyond merely epistomological questions, and indeed encompass an interrogation of the whole philosophical basis of Marxism. The problem may roughly be stated as involving serious doubts about the adequacy of the Marxian (and thus, implicitly, the Hegelian) concept of subjectivity. We wish to suggest in what follows th…

    S V Hopper, Susan Hopper et al.•ARTICLE•American Journal of Public Health•1984•Referências: 10

Home health aides were offered to half of a group of 227 low-income diabetic clinic patients; in the group offered aides, fasting blood sugar (FBS) declined when compared to control group (10.1 mg/dl vs an increase of 5.1 mg/dl), and missed clinic appointments and emergency room use also decreased. The group of 44, who, upon offer of an aide actually accepted one, showed a significant increase in eye clinic appointments as well as the greatest de…
