Underutilised crops in Europe
In the context of a rapidly growing global population and significant climatic and environmental change, there is an urgent need to produce nutritious food in a sustainable manner. Some crops are underutilised in Europe, despite their suitability to local environments, viability for sustainable production and potential to improve diets. Rye ( Secale cereale ) has a long history of cultivation in Europe, yet is underutilised owing to complex histo…

Archaeobotanical analysis of fuel and forest management from a Roman pottery workshop in southern France (Mas des Tourelles, Beaucaire)
Late Neolithic plant subsistence and farming activities on the southern margins of the Massif Central (France)
Seed and fruit remains from archaeological sites provide the most direct source of evidence on ancient crops and plant food resources. Earlier studies on late Neolithic sites (3500–2200 BC) in the Grands Causses and Hérault valley areas focused on cave and rock-shelter sites. Here, we discuss new and previously published archaeobotanical evidence from open-air settlements, which should be considered as more representative of the standard subsiste…

The Gramiere site belongs to a series of villas in the Gard rhodanien region that have benefited from detailed studies between 1995 and 2005. This site presents numerous points of interest thanks to its level of exceptional conservation. It includes in particular a big agricultural building from the end of the Antiquity with its original morphology the use of which will be discussed in the article. In addition, the site has revealed explicit trac…
Stable carbon and nitrogen isotopes and quality traits of fossil cereal grains provide clues on sustainability at the beginnings of Mediterranean agriculture
We present a novel approach to study the sustainability of ancient Mediterranean agriculture that combines the measurement of carbon isotope discrimination (Δ 13 C) and nitrogen isotope composition ( δ 15 N) along with the assessment of quality traits in fossil cereal grains. Charred grains of naked wheat and barley were recovered in Los Castillejos , an archaeological site in SE Spain, with a continuous occupation of ca. 1500 years starting soon…
A foundation offering at the Roman port of Lattara (Lattes, France)
During the 1 st c. BC, evidence of cuit practices appear near the banks of the Vidourle river, probably next to a trenched enclosure. They include a crémation area associated with deposits of votive vases, coins, fibulas and food offerings. Some décades after the creation of the road station about 30 BC, these practices are carried on within a walled enclosure that is set up around an altar by the middle of the Augustan period and enlarged about …
Historical biogeography of olive domestication ( Olea europaea L.) as revealed by geometrical morphometry applied to biological and archaeological material
Aim This study intends to improve our understanding of historical biogeography of olive domestication in the Mediterranean Basin, particularly in the north‐western area. Location Investigations were performed simultaneously on olive stones from extant wild populations, extant cultivated varieties from various Mediterranean countries, and archaeological assemblages of Spanish, French and Italian settlements. Methods A combination of morphometrics …
