Politische Stabilität und Konflikt
Conflict Prevention and Conflict Resolution
Several Publications on conflict prevention are reviewed (Cr(ocker et al., Hancock and Mitchel, Miall, and Wallensteen)
Prevention and sovereignty
Prevention has become one of the main objectives of the states in international politics, particularly since the end of the cold war. Nevertheless a number of dilemmas are present which make it difficult to implement systematically such a policy
Introduction
In this review essay, Wolf-DieterEeberwein comments on the book directed by Josepha Laroche, called La Loyauté dans les relations internationales (Paris, l'Harmattan). This collective book gathers the presentations that occurred during a conference by the International Studies Section of the French Political Science Association (Association Française de Science Politique) the 17 contributions discuss and spot the light on central aspects of the n…
Deutschland und Polen — Eine Werte- und Interessengemeinschaft?
Humanitarian activities of the German Red Cross in the Balkans – An evaluation
The Future of International Warfare
If the absence of war among democracies is assumed to be indicative of a pluralistic security community as defined by Karl Deutsch, this does not necessarily justify the expectation that the future will be less and less war-prone. This would only be the case if the democratization of the interstate system is expected to continue. On theoretical grounds the conditions for the integration as well as disintegration within and between political commu…
The seduction of power
More‐powerful nations are more war‐prone. The following study tries to replicate this result, obtained by Stuart Bremer (1980), for the serious dispute involvement of nations. The analysis reveals that, in accordance with Bremer, the relationship does not necessarily hold for any short period of time. Over the long run, however, the hypothesis is corroborated. Using a linear regression model for testing the relationship between power status, defi…
Prelude to war
The study provides an overview of a set of data describing the incidence and character of serious international disputes in the twentieth century. The principal findings reported include: Average annual incidence of serious international disputes has risen more than fourfold between 1900 and 1976. The underlying cause of this increase seems to be simply the increased size of the international system. The relative likelihood with which a serious d…
The Quantitative Study of International Conflict
This article presents and discusses a number of empirical findings from quantitative research on the cause of war. To understand war, in particular, requires an understanding of inter national conflict in general. Hence, the article first examines the theoretical contribution of quantitative research to the conceptualization of international conflict. It is argued that research on international conflict should try to reconcile two seemingly oppos…
External and Internal Conflict Behavior Among Nations, 1966-1967
In this article we attempt to replicate the hypothesis tested by Rummel and others that external and internal conflict are unrelated. We do this using data for 125 nations for the years 1966-1967. As did Rummel, we use exploratory factor analysis and regression analysis; in addition, we also employ confirmatory factor analysis. Results from confirmatory factor analysis contradict Rummel and reveal moderately strong correlations between internal a…
Internes und externes Konfliktverhalten von Nationen, 1966 – 1967 / Internal and External Conflict Behavior of Nations, 1966 - 1967
In this article a hypothesis proposed and tested by RUMMEL is taken up again: external and internal conflict are unrelated to each other. In our attempt at replication we use data for 125 nations and for the years 1966-67. Like RUMMEL we use exploratory factor analysis and regression, and, in addition, confirmatory factor analysis. Results from exploratory factor analysis seem to support RUMMEL’s conclusions. Yet confirmatory factor analysis reve…
