  • Stolen Guns

    Open Access•Hannah S Laqueur, Sonia L Robinson•ARTICLE•Crime & Delinquency•2026

Theft is widely recognized as an important source of guns to offenders, yet direct evidence remains limited. Using linked California administrative records (2010–2021) on firearm transactions, thefts, and crime recoveries, we examine characteristics associated with reported theft and, among stolen guns, predictors of recovery in crime. Cox models show theft risk factors closely mirror established correlates for law enforcement recovery: low-cost,…

  • Identifying high‐risk firearms dealers

    Open Access•Hannah S Laqueur, Colette Smirniotis•ARTICLE•Criminology & Public Policy•2025•Referências: 9

Research Summary Using firearm transaction and crime gun recovery records from California (2010–2021), we employ machine learning to identify dealers who sold largest number and highest fraction of guns recovered in crimes within 1 year of sale. This short “time‐to‐crime” (TTC) is a well‐established indicator of potential illegal activity by dealers or traffickers. We developed two primary prediction models: the first classifies dealer‐years in t…

    Open Access•Paul M Reeping, Hannah S Laqueur et al.•ARTICLE•Journal of Urban Health•2024•Citada por: 2•Referências: 4

To date, there have been no peer-reviewed studies in the United States estimating the impact of gun-free zone policies in alcohol-serving establishments on rates of firearm violence in and around such establishments. In this study, we utilized a cross-sectional design to estimate the impact of Texas's 51% alcohol law, which prohibits the carrying of firearms in establishments that generate over half of their revenue from alcohol sales. The analys…

  • Predicting Short Time-to-Crime Guns

    Open Access•Hannah S Laqueur, Colette Smirniotis et al.•ARTICLE•Journal of Urban Health•2024•Referências: 4

Gun-related crime continues to be an urgent public health and safety problem in cities across the US. A key question is: how are firearms diverted from the legal retail market into the hands of gun offenders? With close to 8 million legal firearm transaction records in California (2010-2020) linked to over 380,000 records of recovered crime guns (2010-2021), we employ supervised machine learning to predict which firearms are used in crimes shortl…

  • Trends and Sources of Crime Guns in California

    Open Access•Hannah S Laqueur, Christopher D McCort et al.•ARTICLE•Journal of Urban Health•2023•Citada por: 5•Referências: 3

Firearm-related interpersonal violence is a leading cause of death and injury in cities across the United States, and understanding the movement of firearms from on-the-books sales to criminal end-user is critical to the formulation of gun violence prevention policy. In this study, we assemble a unique dataset that combines records for over 380,000 crime guns recovered by law enforcement in California (2010-2021), and more than 126,000 guns repor…

Julia P Schleimer, Shani A Buggs et al.•ARTICLE•American Journal of Public Health•2022•Citada por: 12•Referências: 22

Objectives. To describe associations between neighborhood racial and economic segregation and violence during the COVID-19 pandemic. Methods. For 13 US cities, we obtained zip code–level data on 5 violence outcomes from March through July 2018 through 2020. Using negative binomial regressions and marginal contrasts, we estimated differences between quintiles of racial, economic, and racialized economic segregation using the Index of Concentration…

  • Racial bias and DUI enforcement

    Open Access•Rose M C Kagawa, Christopher D McCort et al.•ARTICLE•Criminology & Public Policy•2021•Citada por: 1•Referências: 3

Research summary This study estimates disparities in driving under the influence (DUI) convictions relative to the frequency with which racial/ethnic groups engage in alcohol‐impaired driving. We use had‐been‐drinking crashes and self‐reported alcohol‐impaired driving to approximate alcohol‐impaired driving frequency for racial/ethnic groups in California from 2001 to 2016. DUI conviction and had‐been‐drinking crash data are from a sample of 72,3…

    Open Access•Hannah S Laqueur, Garen J Wintemute•ARTICLE•Criminology & Public Policy•2019•Referências: 6

Research Summary In this article, we detail recent efforts in California to identify and target high‐risk firearm owners to help prevent firearm violence, including mass shootings. We begin by describing gun violence restraining orders, also known as extreme risk protection orders, which provide a judicial mechanism for firearm recovery and a time‐limited prohibition on firearm purchases. Next, we discuss California's Armed and Prohibited Persons…

  • Uses and Abuses of Drug Decriminalization in Portugal

    Open Access•Hannah S Laqueur, Hannah Laqueur•ARTICLE•Law & Social Inquiry•2014•Citada por: 7•Referências: 3

In 2001, Portugal decriminalized the acquisition, possession, and use of small quantities of all psychoactive drugs. The significance of this legislation has been misunderstood. Decriminalization did not trigger dramatic changes in drug‐related behavior because, as an analysis of Portugal's predecriminalization laws and practices reveals, the reforms were more modest than suggested by the media attention they received. Portugal illustrates the sh…
