Dynamics of psychological distress
Overall, these findings suggest that the variation in psychological distress between the waves was mostly influenced by social support, loneliness, and social activities, rather than by exposure to COVID-19. Mitigation policies aimed at controlling the pandemic should focus more on addressing specific individual psychosocial vulnerabilities
Associations of migrant and refugee status with physical comorbidity and mortality among young adults with incident non-affective psychotic disorders
Among those with NAPDs, migrants (particularly refugees) are at greater risk of developing diabetes and infectious diseases. Given the global increase in refugee populations, our findings have important implications for healthcare providers and suggest that these vulnerable individuals may require closer monitoring of physical health
Facilitators and barriers to participation and scale-up of a non-specialist delivered psychological intervention for adolescents in low-resourced settings
Globally, the number of refugees and displaced individuals has surpassed 100 million for the first time in history. Refugees are more likely than non-refugee populations to experience psychological distress and develop mental disorders. Early Adolescent Skills for Emotion (EASE), developed by the World Health Organization, is a potentially scalable task-sharing intervention targeting symptoms of internalizing disorders such as depression and anxi…
Specialized mental healthcare use for common mental disorders and prescription of antidepressants before and during the Covid-19 pandemic among working-age refugees and Swedish-born individuals – a na…
Refugees, especially those already in a marginalized position, had increased CMD-related mental healthcare use during the pandemic. Strategies to meet the mental health care needs of marginalized refugees are of outmost public health importance
Healthcare utilization patterns among migrant populations
Psychological distress and online advice-seeking in times of Covid-19
Addressing challenges faced by young refugees in the Netherlands
Young refugees face numerous challenges before, during, and after their journey, leading to higher rates of mental health issues such as depression, anxiety, and posttraumatic stress disorder. These problems often remain untreated due to barriers like limited services, stigma, and varied distress expressions. One effective scalable intervention that bridges this treatment gap is problem management plus (PM+), a transdiagnostic program delivered b…
Association of common mental disorders and related multimorbidity with subsequent labor market marginalization among refugee and Swedish-born young adults
Background Common mental disorders (CMDs), multimorbidity, and refugee status are associated with poor labor market outcome. Little is known about how these factors interact in young adults. Objective We aimed to i) investigate whether the association of CMDs and multimorbidity with labor market marginalization (LMM) differs between refugee and Swedish-born young adults and ii) identify diagnostic groups with particularly high risk for LMM. Metho…

Sustainable labour market participation among working young adults with diagnosed attention deficit/hyperactivity disorder (ADHD)
Over half of working individuals with ADHD maintain a strong attachment to the labour market several years after their first diagnosis of ADHD. Therefore, it is important to target those who have problems maintaining a position in the labour market, including women, those with low educational levels, and those living outside large cities
The role of sociodemographic and clinical factors in the initiation and discontinuation of attention deficit hyperactivity disorder medication among young adults in Sweden
Besides medical factors, sociodemographics, such as educational attainment and immigrant status might also play a role in the initiation and discontinuation of ADHD medication use among young adults newly diagnosed with ADHD
Are we equally at risk of changing smoking behavior during a public health crisis? Impact of educational level on smoking from the Tempo cohort
Current findings showed a widening of the social inequality gap in relation to smoking rates, underscoring the increased vulnerability of persons with low educational level to smoking and the likely inadequate focus on social inequalities in relation to tobacco control policies during the pandemic
Clustering of social disadvantage with attention‐deficit/hyperactivity disorder in young adults
The clustering of social disadvantage with attention‐deficit/hyperactivity disorder (ADHD) in young adulthood is not well understood. We examined the clustering of ADHD with low educational attainment and unemployment in young adulthood; whether such clustering is stronger when unemployment is prolonged; and whether further clustering of disability pensioning, low education and unemployment occurs among those with ADHD. Data were obtained from Sw…
Impact of work arrangements during the Covid-19 pandemic on mental health in France
Symptoms of anxiety/depression were found in 28.8% of the participants at least once.•Unemployment and financial difficulties were associated with anxiety/depression.•Targeted mental health support could lessen mental health impact
Occupational Branch and Labor Market Marginalization among Young Employees with Adult Onset of Attention Deficit Hyperactivity Disorder—A Population-Based Matched Cohort Study
We compared labor market marginalization (LMM), conceptualized as days of unemployment, sickness absence and disability pension, across occupational branches (manufacturing, construction, trade, finance, health and social care, and education), among young employees with or without attention deficit hyperactivity disorder (ADHD) and examined whether sociodemographic and health-related factors explain these associations. All Swedish residents aged …

Work Participation among Women and Men in Sweden
Observational research studies from various countries suggest that women's working patterns across the life course are often fragmented compared to men's. The aim of our investigation was to use nationwide register data from Sweden to examine the extent to which generation and time of entry to the work force explain the sex differences in work participation across the life course. Our analyses were based on individual-level data on 4,182,581 wome…
Diagnosis-Specific Work Disability before and after Lumbar Spine Decompression Surgery—A Register Study from Sweden
Low back pain (LBP) patients undergoing lumbar spine decompression surgery (LSDS) often suffer from multi-comorbidity and experience high work disability. This study aimed to identify diagnosis-specific work disability patterns in all LBP-patients before and after LSDS during 2008-2010, that were aged 19-60 years and living in Sweden ( n = 10,800) and compare these patterns to LBP-patients without LSDS ( n = 109,179), and to matched individuals w…
Trajectories of antidepressant use before and after a suicide attempt among refugees and Swedish-born individuals
Despite previous reports on refugees being undertreated regarding psychiatric healthcare, no major differences in antidepressant treatment between refugees and Swedish-born suicide attempters were found
Sickness absence and disability pension among women with breast cancer
SA among women with BC was elevated mainly in the first year after diagnosis. New SA following BC diagnosis can accurately be predicted
Unemployment Trajectories and the Early Risk of Disability Pension among Young People with and without Autism Spectrum Disorder
Depression and anxiety are associated with unemployment and disability pension, while autism spectrum disorder (ASD) is less studied. We aimed to first identify unemployment trajectories among young adults with and without ASD, and then to examine their social determinants. Finally, we used the trajectories as determinants for subsequent disability pension. We used a population-based cohort, including 814 people who were 19-35 years old, not on d…
Labour market marginalisation among refugees from different countries of birth
BACKGROUND: The aim was to elucidate if the risk of labour market marginalisation (LMM), measured as long-term unemployment, long-term sickness absence, disability pension and a combined measure of these three measures, differed between refugees and non-refugee migrants with different regions of birth compared with native Swedes. METHODS: All non-pensioned individuals aged 19-60 years who were resident in Sweden on 31 December 2009 were included …
Trajectories of work disability and unemployment among young adults with common mental disorders
A large share, nearly 50%, of young adults with CMDs, substantially higher than in the comparison group of individuals without mental disorders, display increasing or high persistent levels of either work disability or unemployment throughout the follow-up period. Low educational level, comorbidity with other mental disorders and living in rural areas were factors that increased the probability for LMM
Risk of disability pension in first and second generation immigrants
Compared to natives, the risk of DP was higher in first and second generation immigrants. Higher estimates were seen for immigrants from Europe outside EU25 and from the rest of the world in the first generation. No considerable differences in estimates regarding mental or somatic DP diagnoses were found
Labour-market marginalisation after mental disorders among young natives and immigrants living in Sweden
Mental disorders were associated with all three measures of labour-market marginalisation, strongest with subsequent disability pension. Native Swedes had higher risk estimates for both disability pension and sickness absence, but lower risk estimates for unemployment than immigrants. Previous labour-market attachment explained a great part of the association between immigrant status and subsequent labour-market marginalisation
Exposure to parental mortality and markers of morbidity, and the risks of attempted and completed suicide in offspring
BACKGROUND: There is evidence of parental risk factors for suicidal behaviour in offspring, but research on variations in their effects with offspring's age at first exposure is sparse. AIMS: To explore the effects of age at exposure to parental mortality and markers of morbidity on the risks of suicide and attempted suicide in offspring. METHODS: This was a case-control study effected through record linkage between Swedish registers. Individuals…
Work Disability Before and After Diabetes Diagnosis
Objectives. We evaluated the risk of work disability (sick leave and disability pension) before and after diabetes diagnosis relative to individuals without diabetes during the same time period, as well as the trajectory of work disability around the diagnosis. Methods. This Swedish population-based cohort study with register data included 14 428 individuals with incident diabetes in 2006 and 39 702 individuals without diabetes during 2003 to 200…

Suicide among first-generation and second-generation immigrants in Sweden
BACKGROUND: Previous research suggests that first-generation immigrants have a lower suicide risk than those both born in Sweden and with both parents born in Sweden (natives), while the suicide risk in the second generation seems higher. The aim of this study was to investigate to what extent suicide risk in first-generation and second-generation (both parents born abroad) and intermediate-generation (only one parent born abroad) immigrants comp…
Predictors of Suicide and Suicide Attempt in Subway Stations
Fetal and childhood growth and the risk of violent and non-violent suicide attempts
BACKGROUND: Inverse associations of birth length with suicide attempts have recently been reported. Whether growth during childhood alters this association is not known. The influences on patterns of growth in fetal life and childhood might be different for violent and non-violent suicide attempts. OBJECTIVE: To investigate the effect of fetal and childhood growth and possible effect modification on suicide attempts, both violent and non-violent,…

Predictors of suicidal behaviour in 36,304 individuals sickness absent due to stress-related mental disorders - a Swedish register linkage cohort study
Several predictors related to socio-demographics, sickness absence and health-care consumption were identified as risk factors for suicidal behavior. Consideration of these risk factors is of both clinical and public health importance
Determinants in adolescence for adult sickness absence in women and men
The findings suggest that sickness absence in adulthood is predicted by factors measured in adolescence. These predictors may differ for women and men. For women, early life absence and social environmental factors, for men low achievements at school and lack of employment of their father seem to be predictive
Risk markers of all-cause and diagnosis-specific disability pension - a prospective cohort study of individuals sickness absent due to stress-related mental disorders
Several predictors could be identified as risk markers for disability pension. The variation in the effect of risk markers with regard to age and diagnosis of disability pension speaks in favour of the importance of a person-centered approach in treatment and rehabilitation
Associations between number of sick-leave days and future all-cause and cause-specific mortality
Even a low number of sick-leave days was associated with a higher risk for premature death in the following 11 years, also when adjusting for morbidity. This was the case for both women and men and also for cause-specific mortality. More knowledge is warranted on the mechanisms leading to higher mortality risks among sickness absentees, as sickness certification is a common measure in health care, and most sick leave is due to diagnoses you do no…
Diagnosis-specific disability pension and risk of all-cause and cause-specific mortality – a cohort study of 4.9 million inhabitants in Sweden
All DP diagnoses were associated with a higher mortality risk. Even individuals granted DP due to diagnoses with low mortality risk displayed a higher risk for premature death. This warrants close monitoring of disability pensioners and further studies on consequences of being on disability pension

Premature mortality in autism spectrum disorder
BACKGROUND: Mortality has been suggested to be increased in autism spectrum disorder (ASD). AIMS: To examine both all-cause and cause-specific mortality in ASD, as well as investigate moderating role of gender and intellectual ability. METHOD: Odds ratios (ORs) were calculated for a population-based cohort of ASD probands (n = 27,122, diagnosed between 1987 and 2009) compared with gender-, age- and county of residence-matched controls (n = 2,672,…
