Male Contraceptive Methods
A better understanding of men's and women's attitudes and relationship contexts into which novel male contraceptive methods will be introduced is needed. A cross‐sectional survey of 12,435 randomly selected heterosexual men aged 18–60 years—and 9122 of their female partners—was conducted in Nigeria, Kenya, the DR Congo (DRC), Ivory Coast, Bangladesh, and Vietnam, during 2021–2022. Across all countries, the majority endorsed that both men and wome…
Development and Validation of a Multidimensional Intravaginal Ring Acceptability Scale Among US Women and Their Male Partners
Objective Intravaginal rings (IVRs) are marketed or in development for contraception and other indications. We sought to develop and validate the IVR Acceptability Scale (IVR‐AS) as a multidimensional, standardized tool for assessing IVR acceptability among end‐users in the United States. Methods Scale items reflect specific aspects of IVR acceptability for women and male partners. Response options range from 1 (not‐at‐all acceptable) to 5 (highl…
Men's Willingness to Use and Preferences for Novel Male Contraceptive Methods in Malawi
Evidence is needed in low‐ and middle‐income countries regarding men's willingness to use new male contraceptive methods in development, preferences regarding method attributes, and what shapes willingness/preferences. We analyzed data from cross‐sectional surveys with 611 men in Malawi, concerning willingness to use each of four types of new male methods. Mean age was 24.5 years; half (50 percent) were married/cohabiting. Over half (51 percent) …
Hearing From Men Living With HIV
Engaging men in HIV services remains a challenge across sub-Saharan Africa. There is a critical need to better understand facilitators of men's successful engagement with HIV services and assess if there are similarities across contexts. We conducted in-depth interviews and focus group discussions with 92 men living with HIV (MLHIV) across Malawi, Uganda, South Africa, and Eswatini, most of whom had been diagnosed with HIV within the last 5 years…
Meeting men’s mental health needs during Covid-19 and beyond
Confirming—and testing—bonds of trust
Amidst the COVID-19 pandemic and national responses, trust (one’s belief that a system acts in one’s best interest) is important to consider. In community health systems, trust is embedded in relationships between clients, CHWs, and health system stakeholders. This mixed-methods study explores trust through the evolving COVID-19 crisis in Bangladesh, Haiti, and Kenya, where multi-country community health research was underway. We investigate the …
A man without money getting a sexual partner? It doesn’t exist in our community”
Research on transactional sexual relationships has largely focused on women's perspectives. Better understanding the men's views-especially regarding relationships with adolescent girls and young women-can inform HIV prevention efforts. In 2017, 134 in-depth interviews were conducted with the male partners of girls and young women aged 19-47 years, 94 in Uganda and 40 in Eswatini. Respondents were recruited at venues such as bars where men and po…
The Client Empowerment in Community Health Systems Scale
BACKGROUND: Effectively measuring client empowerment is critical for monitoring and supporting empowerment through interventions, including via community health workers (CHWs) on the front line. Yet a comprehensive measure capturing the multidimensional aspects of client empowerment is not currently available. We aimed to develop and validate the Client Empowerment in Community Health Systems (CE-CHS) Scale in three countries. METHODS: We used da…
Development and validation of a multi-dimensional scale to assess community health worker motivation
BACKGROUND: Ensuring that Community Health Workers (CHWs) are motivated is critical to their performance, retention and well-being - and ultimately to the effectiveness of community health systems worldwide. While CHW motivation is as multi-dimensional construct, there is no multi-dimensional measure available to guide programming. In this study, we developed and validated a pragmatic, multi-dimensional measure of CHW motivation. METHODS: Scale v…
Measuring client trust in community health workers
BACKGROUND: Client trust in community health workers (CHWs) is integral for improving quality and equity of community health systems globally. Despite its recognized conceptual and pragmatic importance across health areas, there are no quantitative measures of trust in the context of community health services. In this multi-country study, we aimed to develop and validate a scale that assesses trust in CHWs. METHODS: To develop the scale, we used …
Men and Covid-19
In this commentary, the authors point out that there are important gender determinants to both men's and women's vulnerabilities to COVID-19, and call on the global health community to unpack and address these early in the COVID-19 pandemic response. They point to best practices and tools from two decades of engaging men in research and programming in the sexual and reproductive health field
The People Living with HIV (PLHIV) Resilience Scale
Supporting resilience among people living with HIV (PLHIV) is crucial to their sustained uptake of HIV services as well as psychological and social wellbeing. However, no measures exist to assess resilience specifically in relation to living with HIV. We developed the PLHIV Resilience Scale and evaluated its performance in surveys with 1207 PLHIV in Cameroon, Senegal and Uganda as part of the PLHIV Stigma Index-the most widely used tool to track …
Gender Norms and HIV Testing/Treatment Uptake
How does the endorsement of different dimensions of gender norms by men and/or women influence their use of HIV testing and antiretroviral treatment? This question was examined using data from a 2014 population-based survey of 1053 women and 1004 men, ages 18-49, in rural South Africa. We used a global measure for views toward gender norms (the GEM Scale), plus four subsets of scale items (all reliabilities ≥ 0.7). In multivariate analyses using …
The Association Between Men’s Concern About Demonstrating Masculine Characteristics and Their Sexual Risk Behaviors
Understanding men’s networks and perceptions of leadership to promote HIV testing and treatment in Agincourt, South Africa
Understanding informal leadership in high HIV prevalence settings is important for the success of popular opinion leader (POL) and other HIV testing and treatment promotion strategies which aim to leverage the influence of these leaders. We conducted a study in Mpumalanga province, South Africa, in which we aimed to: (1) describe men's personal networks and key social relationships; and (2) describe the types of individuals men identify as leader…
Gender Norms, Gender Role Conflict/Stress and HIV Risk Behaviors Among Men in Mpumalanga, South Africa
Measuring Men’s Gender Norms and Gender Role Conflict/Stress in a High HIV-Prevalence South African Setting
A cluster randomized-controlled trial of a community mobilization intervention to change gender norms and reduce HIV risk in rural South Africa
ClinicalTrials.gov NCT02129530
