Intercultural Miscommunication in a Postgraduate Mobility Programme in Indonesia
Due to the increasing role of Asian countries in global collaboration, intercultural communication research in Asia is gaining popularity. However, little is known about the intercultural interactions in intra-Asia. This study explored intercultural miscommunication in a short-term mobility programme in Indonesia through a qualitative approach. The interviewees were six postgraduates from a Malaysian university who came from China, Iran, Malaysia…
Prize‐winning paper for 2025, SJTG sponsored lectures, forums and tribute
Since 2013, the Singapore Journal of Tropical Geography (SJTG) has awarded prizes for the best paper by a graduate student and for the best overall paper published in the journal. All past prize winners are recorded on the SJTG's homepage, available at https://onlinelibrary.wiley.com/page/journal/14679493/homepage/best_paper_prize.htm. However, in 2025, Wiley (who publishes the SJTG through an agreement with the Department of Geography at the Nat…

A new spatial optimization layout framework for urban LID facilities in response to climate change impacts
Forecasting heterogeneous risk diffusion in the carbon neutral integrated energy system
Integrated energy systems have been regarded as the crucial technical route for the energy system low‐carbon transition to mitigate climate change. However, the integration of multi‐energy systems is highly complex, introducing new risks and challenges to the secure operation of the system, especially in the current digital era. To address this issue, this paper proposed the multi‐dimension risk diffusion assessment model to unveil the risk diffu…

Assessment of temperature extremes and climate change impacts in Singapore, 1982–2018
Understanding extreme temperature variations is important for countries to manage risks associated with climate change. Yet, the characteristics of temperature extremes and possible climate change impacts have not been adequately investigated in Singapore. In this study, we attempted to do so by defining 14 extreme temperature indices (ETIs) for the period of 1982–2018 in Singapore, and investigating the trends of those ETIs using a pre‐whitening…
Quantifying precipitation extremes and their relationships with large‐scale climate oscillations in a tropical country, Singapore
Extreme precipitation indices (EPIs) were defined to quantify the precipitation extremes in Singapore, a typical tropical country situated near the equator. The paper investigated the spatial and temporal variability of precipitation extremes based on seventeen EPIs using non‐parametric Mann‐Kendall test and Sen’s slope, and further explored the linear and nonlinear relationships between precipitation extremes and four large‐scale global climate …

Land Taking and Electoral Rule Setting
This article explains the regional variation in the electoral rules governing village election in China. We argue that China’s fast urbanization and land development have undermined the quality of rural democracy because local government officials faced pressure to ensure “right” cadres elected, and therefore had motivation to manipulate election rules. A panel dataset covering two rounds of elections in 2005 and 2008 is utilized to test the hypo…

SJTG paper prizes for 2014
We begin volume 36 with the announcement of paper prizes for 2014 (volume 35). This is the second year that prizes have been awarded both to the best paper by a graduate student, and to the best overall paper. Like last year, when the inaugural prizes were awarded to Sai Latt and Janet Sturgeon respectively (Latt, 2013; Sturgeon, 2013), the co-editors compiled a shortlist for each category from which special committees of editorial board members …

Ten years of the Three Gorges Dam
The Three Gorges Dam (TGD), the world’s largest source of ‘clean’ hydroelectric power (Shen and Xie 2004 ), has entered its tenth year after the first turbine went into operation in June 2003. The dam, with a generating capacity 20 times that of the United States’ Hoover Dam, has been hailed as a crucial part of a solution to China’s energy crisis. Despite great benefits, however, major concerns have been voiced over the disastrous environmental …

Seasonal Water Discharge and Sediment Load Changes in the Upper Yangtze, China
Analysis of seasonal water discharge and sediment load data for major tributaries of the Upper Yangtze indicates significant changes from 1957 to 1987. Discrimination between land use–induced and climatic variation–induced changes was attempted using the systematic shift in the seasonal sediment load relative to the seasonal water flow. Available evidence suggests that most of these changes were caused by human activities such as deforestation, w…

GIS‐based flood hazard mapping at different administrative scales
This paper addresses the need for an efficient and cost‐effective methodology for preparing flood hazard maps in data poor countries, particularly those under a monsoon regime where floods pose a recurrent danger. Taking Gangetic West Bengal, India, as an example and using available historical data from government agencies, the study compiled a regional map indicating hazard prone subregional areas for further detailed investigation, thereby isol…
