  • Chronology of the Volchia Griva Megafaunal Locality and Paleolithic Site (Western Siberia) and the Issue of Human Occupation of Siberia at the Last Glacial Maximum

    Open Access•Y V Kuzmin, Sergey V Leshchinskiy et al.•ARTICLE•Radiocarbon•2024•Citada por: 3•Referências: 28

A summary of the chronology for the key paleontological and archaeological site of Volchia Griva in the southern part of the West Siberian Plain is presented. Currently, 42 reliable 14 C values have been generated on animal bones (37 14 C dates) and charcoal (5 14 C dates). Three stratigraphic levels of animal bones are established. The 14 C ages of the fossils are as follows: the upper level—ca. 10,620–12,520 BP; the middle level—ca. 13,700–17,8…

  • The unique Late Paleolithic artifactual bone assemblage from the Volchia Griva site, Western Siberia

    Open Access•Sergey V Leshchinskiy, N Zenin et al.•ARTICLE•Quaternary Research•2023

In 2020, a unique bone assemblage was found at the Late Paleolithic site Volchia Griva. Its base is made of a distal mammoth femur minus epiphysis, in which a cavity has been hollowed out. Impact notches along the edges of the cavity and holes in the metaphysis prove the human-made nature of this specimen. A portion of a polar fox cranium, half of a fox hemimandible, a fox tooth, and a large mammal rib fragment were enclosed in the cavity. The ma…

  • The Volchia Griva mineral oasis as unique locus for research of the mammoth fauna and the late Pleistocene environment in Northern Eurasia

    Open Access•Sergey V Leshchinskiy, Elena Burkanova et al.•ARTICLE•Quaternary Research•2022

This paper describes the results of research at Volchia Griva, the largest site in Asia containing mammoth fauna in situ. It is situated in the south of the West Siberian Plain in the Baraba forest-steppe zone, and occupies an area of several hectares. Analysis of sediments and taphonomy of the site allows us to suggest that thousands of megafaunal remains were buried here in mud pits and erosional depressions. The favorable geochemical landscape…

Artifacts were fi rst discovered at Lugovskoe in 1999 during the collection of faunal remains (Pavlov, Maschenko, 2001). The small collection included small debris, fl akes, a blade with a retouched proximal edge, and two large artifacts: a hammerstone made on a quartzite pebble, and a bidirectional core made on a gray fi ne-grained sandstone cobble. These artifacts suggested that the mammoth assemblage was associated with a Paleolithic site. To …
