  • Archaeometry (radiometric dating, metallography) for two early Iron-Age axes from Northern Europe and Central Asia

Open Access•Matthias Huels, Alexander Panichkin et al.•ARTICLE•Radiocarbon•2026

This study discusses the archaeometry (radiometric dating and metallography) of two Iron-Age axes, one from Kazakhstan (Kyzylzhartas Axe-Adze) and one from Northern Germany (Högersdorf Axe). To understand their age and production, 14 C dating of metallic bound carbon and metallographic analysiswere performed. The Kyzylzhartas Axe-Adze dates to 357–166 BCE and shows an advanced production technique with a careful selection of carburized and non-ca…

Open Access•Matthias Huels, Jacek Pawlyta et al.•ARTICLE•Radiocarbon•2026

Here we present an updated version of radiocarbon concentrations measured in seeds from the Gatersleben Crop Plant Research institute. 14 C-isotope measurements for wheat from 1946 to 2020, which were presented previously, have been complemented with 14 C measurements made on soybean and continued until late summer 2025. Additionally, we measured δ 13 C in wheat samples. A comparison of different 14 C time series over the last 80 years from diffe…

  • Radiocarbon changes in the XI century CE in annual tree rings

Open Access•Andrzej Rakowski, Jacek Pawlyta et al.•ARTICLE•Radiocarbon•2026•Referências: 39

This paper presents new radiocarbon ( 14 C) measurements from annual tree rings of English oak ( Quercus robur L.) from Kujawy, Poland, spanning 1042–1062 CE. The results confirm an increase in Δ 14 C values between 1053 and 1055 CE, within the Oort Minimum of solar activity, consistent with literature values (Brehm et al. 2021a; Eastoe et al. 2019; Terrasi et al. 2020). The data reveal a sustained increase in Δ 14 C values between 1053 and 1055 …

  • Physiological reactions in plants visualized by 14C

Open Access•Andrea Göhring, Matthias Huels et al.•ARTICLE•Radiocarbon•2025•Referências: 1

Marine aerosols can enter the terrestrial environment via sea spray which is known to affect the stable isotope fingerprint of coastal samples (plants, animals/humans), including δ 13 C. However, the impact of sea spray on 14 C dating of terrestrial organisms at coastal sites has not been investigated so far. Besides a direct effect, sea spray is accompanied by physiological effects, e.g., due to salinity. In an artificial sea spray experiment in…

    Open Access•Matthias Huels, C Matthias Hüls et al.•ARTICLE•Archaeometry•2023•Citada por: 1•Referências: 30

This paper presents the results of analyses of metal artefacts discovered at a multiphase site in Nowe Brzesko, Małopolskie Voivodeship, Poland. Fieldwalking prospection led to the discovery of steely iron objects, ploughed out on the site among other numerous archeological finds. A prospecting sondage yielded more corroded metal artefacts, identified mainly as agricultural tools (e.g. sickles, scythes). These chronologically nondistinctive artef…

Here we report radiocarbon measurements made on wheat seed tissue ( Triticum aestivum L.; winter or spring type growth habit), from the seed archive of the IPK Gatersleben, Sachsen-Anhalt, Germany, which was harvested between 1946 and 2020. The results give an overview of 75 years of radiocarbon concentration evolution in agricultural plant products. The wheat tissue radiocarbon concentrations follow known pre- and post-bomb radiocarbon records, …

  • Interpreting 14 C Measurements on 3rd–4th Century AD Iron Artifacts from Nydam, Denmark

Open Access•Matthias Huels, John Meadows et al.•ARTICLE•Radiocarbon•2019•Citada por: 2•Referências: 19

Radiocarbon ( 14 C) ages were determined for 10 iron samples from the war booty offering site in the Nydam peat bog (SE Denmark), and compared to archaeologically inferred periods of deposition. Additional 14 C measurements were carried out for modern iron standards made with charcoal of known isotopic composition to evaluate possible effects of handling. Modern iron standards give depleted 14 C concentrations, compared to the initial charcoal 14…

  • Absolute Dating of Early Iron Objects from the Ancient Orient

Open Access•Matthias Huels, Ingo Petri et al.•ARTICLE•Radiocarbon•2019•Referências: 24

Luristan Iron Mask Swords have been recovered mostly from illegal diggings in the 1920s. The about 90 known objects are characterized by a disk-shaped pommel on the top of the handle with two mounted bearded heads on two sides. According to the similarity in form and radiocarbon ( 14 C) measurements on two swords from museum collections, an overall short production period was assumed around 1000 BC (Moorey 1991; Rehder 1991). Here we present the …
