  • A simple and effective method to remove hydrogen sulfide from fluid and gas samples prior to radiocarbon analysis of CO 2 gas and dissolved inorganic carbon

Open Access•Li Xu, Alan Gagnon et al.•ARTICLE•Radiocarbon•2026

The radiocarbon content of dissolved inorganic carbon (DIC: CO 2(aq) , HCO 3 – , CO 3 2– ) and gaseous CO 2 can provide valuable information for the cycling and residence time of carbon in groundwaters, porewaters, hydrocarbon reservoirs, methane seeps, and hydrothermal systems. Fluids and gases from these systems often contain high concentrations of hydrogen sulfide (H 2 S) that interferes with critical steps of the analytical procedure, particu…

  • Radiocarbon measurements of dissolved inorganic carbon (DIC) in sediment porewater and seawater at AWI Micadas

Open Access•Hendrik Grotheer, Jens S Hammes et al.•ARTICLE•Radiocarbon•2025

Radiocarbon ( 14 C) measurements on dissolved inorganic carbon (DIC) are a powerful tool to trace water masses and carbon cycling in the ocean. Existing methodologies to determine the 14 C content of seawater DIC requires large volumes of sample (usually >100 mL) and specialized graphitization techniques to achieve the accuracy and precision needed for meaningful data interpretation. The advancement of the CO 2 gas ionization accelerator mass spe…

  • Comparability of Radiocarbon Measurements in Dissolved Inorganic Carbon of Seawater Produced at Eth-Zurich

    Open Access•Maxi Castrillejo, Roberta L Hansman et al.•ARTICLE•Radiocarbon•2024•Citada por: 1•Referências: 18

Radiocarbon observations (Δ 14 C) in dissolved inorganic carbon (DIC) of seawater provide useful information about ocean carbon cycling and ocean circulation. To deliver high-quality observations, the Laboratory of Ion Beam Physics (LIP) at ETH-Zurich developed a new simplified method allowing the rapid analysis of radiocarbon in DIC of small seawater samples, which is continually assessed by following internal quality controls. However, a compar…

  • Sequential Thermal Analysis of Complex Organic Mixtures

    Open Access•Ulrich M Hanke, Alan R Gagnon et al.•ARTICLE•Radiocarbon•2023•Citada por: 2•Referências: 29

Sequential thermal analysis allows for deconvoluting the refractory nature and complexity of carbon mixtures embedded in mineral matrices for subsequent offline stable carbon and radiocarbon ( 14 C) isotope analyses. Originally developed to separate Holocene from more ancient sedimentary organic matter to improve dating of marine sediments, the Ramped Pyrolysis and Oxidation (RPO) apparatus, or informally, the “dirt burner” is now used to address…

  • Radiocarbon in Dissolved Organic Carbon by Uv Oxidation

    Open Access•Li Xu, Mark L Roberts et al.•ARTICLE•Radiocarbon•2022•Referências: 2

This note describes improvements of UV oxidation method that is used to measure carbon isotopes of dissolved organic carbon (DOC) at the National Ocean Sciences Accelerator Mass Spectrometry Facility (NOSAMS). The procedural blank is reduced to 2.6 ± 0.6 μg C, with Fm of 0.42 ± 0.10 and δ 13 C of –28.43 ± 1.19‰. The throughput is improved from one sample per day to two samples per day

  • Implications of Single-Step Graphitization for Reconstructing Late Holocene Relative Sea-Level Using Radiocarbon-Dated Organic Coastal Sediment

    Open Access•Juliet P Sefton, Andrew C Kemp et al.•ARTICLE•Radiocarbon•2022•Referências: 47

Late Holocene relative sea-level reconstructions are commonly generated using proxies preserved in salt-marsh and mangrove sediment. These depositional environments provide abundant material for radiocarbon dating in the form of identifiable macrofossils (salt marshes) and bulk organic sediment (mangroves). We explore if single-step graphitization of these samples in preparation for radiocarbon dating can increase the number and temporal resoluti…
