Reevaluation of radiocarbon counting statistics on the Micadas AMS system
A reassessment of radiocarbon counting statistics in accelerator mass spectrometry (AMS) at the Andre E. Lalonde National Facility revealed that the traditionally assumed Poisson distribution may not always apply. An extensive analysis of 2.5 years of 14 C and 12 C data was conducted on a MICADASTM AMS. This study found that only 63% of results adhered to Poisson statistics, while 34.2% showed slight deviations, and 2.8% exhibited strong non-Pois…
An improved setup for radiocarbon analysis of water-soluble organic carbon in environmental matrices
This paper presents an improved setup for radiocarbon analysis of water-soluble organic carbon based on wet chemical oxidation as installed at the Laboratory for the Analysis of Radiocarbon with AMS (LARA) at the University of Bern. The implementation of a non-dispersive infrared CO 2 detector allows more precise and accurate quantification of carbon amounts in samples and establishes the possibility of simple monitoring of the efficacy of flushi…
Holocene landscape evolution, palaeoclimate and human impact in the Fotsch Valley, Stubai Alps, Austria
Peatlands are receiving increasing attention in palaeoenvironmental research and represent very useful terrestrial archives for reconstructing vegetation, climate and human history. Previous palaeoenvironmental studies in the Fotsch Valley, Stubai Alps, Austria, focused on geoarchaeological investigations on the Ullafelsen representing a very important prehistorical encampment site used by Mesolithic hunter-gatherers (10.9–9.5 cal. kyr BP). In or…
Reassessment of Uncertainty Expansion by Linear Addition of Long-Term Components From Top-Down Information
Since radiocarbon accelerator mass spectrometry ( 14 C AMS) is considered a high-precision technique, reassessment of the measurement uncertainty has been a topic of interest. Scientists from analytical and metrological fields have developed the top-down and bottom-up measurement of uncertainty approaches. The 14 C quoted error should approximate the uncertainty of long-term repetitions of the top-down approach in order to be realistic. The novel…
A Low-cost Continuous-flow Gas Interface for Coupling an Elemental Analyzer with a Micadas AMS
A fully automatic continuous-flow gas injection interface was built to couple an elemental analyzer with a MICADAS accelerator mass spectrometer (AMS) as a low-cost option that does not require an absorber trap for CO 2 injection. The complication of the variable ion current during gas injection can be overcome by understanding and controlling the mass flow-dependent ionization yield. The time-varying CO 2 concentrations and carbon mass flows are…
Radiocarbon Measurements of Small-Size Foraminiferal Samples with the Mini Carbon Dating System (Micadas) at the University of Bern
Radiocarbon ( 14 C) measurements of foraminifera often provide the only absolute age constraints in marine sediments. However, they are often challenging as their reliability and accuracy can be compromised by reduced availability of adequate sample material. New analytical advances using the MIni CArbon DAting System (MICADAS) allow 14 C dating of very small samples, circumventing size limitations inherent to conventional 14 C measurements with …
Quantification of dissolved organic 14 C-containing compounds by accelerator mass spectrometry in a corrosion experiment with irradiated steel
Low- and intermediate-level (L/ILW) radioactive waste produced in Switzerland consists of large amounts of 14 C-containing irradiated steel. 14 C will be released during the anoxic corrosion of the steel in the cementitious near field of an L/ILW repository. In this study, a corrosion experiment with irradiated steel was carried out to determine the speciation of 14 C released during the corrosion process in conditions similar to those anticipate…
A Continuous-Flow Gas Interface of a Thermal/Optical Analyzer With 14 C AMS for Source Apportionment of Atmospheric Aerosols
This article reports on the performance of a continuous-flow interface for CO 2 gas feeding into the ion source of a 200-kV accelerator mass spectrometer (AMS) in splitless mode. Distinct CO 2 fractions and subfractions produced by a commercial Sunset OC/EC (organic carbon/elemental carbon) analyzer from ambient atmospheric aerosols filters are injected into the source and then analyzed by their 14 C/ 12 C ratio in real time. New features are rev…
Radiocarbon Dating of Leaf Waxes in the Loess-Paleosol Sequence Kurtak, Central Siberia
Loess-paleosol sequences (LPS) are valuable archives for Quaternary climate and environmental changes. So far, LPS are generally dated using luminescence, with ~10% uncertainties, or radiocarbon ( 14 C) analyses in the rare cases that charcoal or macrofossils are available. For this study, we determined 14 C ages of leaf waxes (long-chain n -alkanes) extracted from the LPS Kurtak in central Siberia. 14 C ages range from 16.7 to 22.9 ka cal BP for…
C Analysis and Sample Preparation at the New Bern Laboratory for the Analysis of Radiocarbon with AMS (Lara)
The University of Bern has set up the new Laboratory for the Analysis of Radiocarbon with AMS (LARA) equipped with an accelerator mass spectrometer (AMS) MICADAS (MIni CArbon Dating System) to continue its long history of 14 C analysis based on conventional counting. The new laboratory is designated to provide routine 14 C dating for archaeology, climate research, and other disciplines at the University of Bern and to develop new analytical syste…
