  • The limits of China’s engagement in the Mediterranean

    Mario Esteban, Ugo Armanini•ARTICLE•Mediterranean Politics•2022•Referências: 4

Spain has recently endorsed a more critical stance towards China. This article explains this posture through the application of role theory and the concept of (mis)trust. Role conflict has intensified from the interplay between China’s new roles of great power and economic and technological competitor, Spain’s higher expectations towards China, and Spain’s self-identified role, greatly influenced by its relations with its traditional European and…

  • Beyond Balancing

Weifeng Zhou, Mario Esteban•ARTICLE•Journal of Contemporary China•2018•Citada por: 41

This article explores the motivations and calculations behind China’s Belt and Road Initiative. It argues that China’s efforts to enhance regional multilateral cooperation across the Eurasian space through the BRI are strongly motivated by a multifaceted grand strategy. First, China makes use of the BRI as a vehicle of soft balancing to frustrate the US containment and encirclement of China, and undermine its dominance in Eurasia and beyond. Seco…

  • A Silent Invasion? African Views on the Growing Chinese Presence in Africa

    Mario Esteban•ARTICLE•African and Asian Studies•2010•Citada por: 16

The works based on opinion polls typically emphasize the positive nature of African views on China, whereas the qualitatively grounded research often point to the presence of both positive and negative perceptions in African discourses on China. Due to the traditional friendship between Beijing and Malabo, the capital…
