The impact of drug decriminalization policy on mental health- and substance-related service utilization among people who use drugs with prior care in British Columbia
BACKGROUND: In 2023, British Columbia implemented a pilot illicit drug decriminalization policy aimed at addressing the high burden of illicit drug toxicity deaths, creating a need to examine its health system impacts. Although research on decriminalization has largely focused only on substance-related outcomes, broader mental health service utilization, including substance-related mental health care, among people who use drugs remains an insuffi…
Childhood poverty, social support, immigration background and adolescent health and life satisfaction
OBJECTIVES: This study examined whether poverty (neighborhood and household) was associated with future health or life satisfaction outcomes and whether the association operated through social support (adult support at home, adult support at school, peer belonging), or differed by the immigration background (nonimmigrant family or immigrant family) of the family. METHODS: This study utilized a retrospective, longitudinal, population-based cohort …
Excess mortality in Covid-19-negative people with non-communicable disorders during the first pandemic wave
During the first pandemic year, mortality in COVID-negative adults was several times greater than before COVID-19, in people with matched NCD distribution and severity. Our findings suggest that low direct COVID-19 mortality was accompanied by less visible-but much higher- indirect mortality due to undiagnosed and/or untreated NCDs, highlighting the need to focus not only on mitigating the harms of new agents, but also of continuing service deliv…

Rising prevalence of depression and widening sociodemographic disparities in depressive symptoms among Filipino youth
Youth depression is a critical target for early intervention due to its strong links with adult depression and long-term functional impairment. In low- and middle-income countries (LMICs) like the Philippines, limited epidemiological data hampers mental health service planning for youth. This study analyzed nationally representative survey data from 2013 (n = 19,178) and 2021 (n = 10,949) to estimate the prevalence of moderate to severe depressiv…

Physician Incentives and Sex/Gender Differences in Depression Care

Methods: Deidentified health data from physician claims, hospitals, vital statistics, prescription database, and insurance plan regist…

In this study the population-level impact of physician incentives on mental health care was estimated using indicators for receipt of counseling/psychotherapy (CP); antidepressant therapy (AT); minimally adequate counseling/psychotherapy; and minimally adequate antidepressan…
