  • Identities as predictors of vaccine hesitancy during the Covid‐19 pandemic

    Open Access•Samantha L Heiman, Edward R Hirt et al.•ARTICLE•Journal of Social Issues•2023•Citada por: 1•Referências: 27

Vaccine hesitancy is variable across individuals and contexts. Theoretical work suggests that group membership should differentially affect attitudes and behavior related to COVID‐19 vaccines, as individuals draw on their identities and experiences relevant to their social groups to deal with uncertainty concerning the vaccines. The present work uses longitudinal survey data to explore how identity predicted vaccination attitudes in the U.S. befo…

  • Sars-CoV-2 Is Not Special, but the Pandemic Is

    J F Brinkworth, Rachel M Rusen•ARTICLE•Annual Review of Anthropology•2022•Referências: 137

The COVID-19 pandemic is extraordinary, but many ordinary events have contributed to its becoming and persistence. Here, we argue that the emergence of the severe acute respiratory syndrome coronavirus 2 (SARS-CoV-2) virus, which has radically altered day-to-day life for people across the globe, was an inevitability of contemporary human ecology, presaged by spillovers past. We show the ways in which the emergence of this virus reiterates other i…

  • Sepsis and the evolution of human increased sensitivity to lipopolysaccharide

    Open Access•J F Brinkworth, Negin Valizadegan•ARTICLE•Evolutionary Anthropology Issues…•2021

Among mammals, humans are exquisitely sensitive to lipopolysaccharide (LPS), an environmentally pervasive bacterial cell membrane component. Very small doses of LPS trigger powerful immune responses in humans and can even initiate symptoms of sepsis. Close evolutionary relatives such as African and Asian monkeys require doses that are an order of magnitude higher to do the same. Why humans have evolved such an energetically expensive antimicrobia…

  • Visceral non-presence

    Open Access•J F Brinkworth, Jessica Brinkworth et al.•ARTICLE•Journal of Legal Anthropology•2020•Citada por: 4•Referências: 12

The local slaughterhouse’s coronavirus cluster was the first large outbreak we heard about in Champaign County. The sprawling pork processing plant sits in the midst of cornfields some 17 miles north of the University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign. Until early May, workers there processed 35 million pounds of pork a month. The company reported its first case on 25 April. Health inspectors arrived two days later to find the plant 90 percent out …

  • Immune System Promiscuity in Human and Nonhuman Primate Evolution

    J F Brinkworth, Courtney C Babbitt•ARTICLE•Human Biology•2019

Many genes that respond to infection have functions outside of immunity and have been found to be under natural selection. Pathogens may therefore incidentally alter nonimmune physiology through engagement with immune system genes. This raises a logical question of how genetically promiscuous the immune system is, here defijined as how heavily cross-referenced the immune system is into other physiological systems. This work examined immune gene p…

  • Infectious Disease and the Diversification of the Human Genome

    J F Brinkworth, Jessica F Brinkworth Jessica F Brinkworth•ARTICLE•Human Biology•2017•Citada por: 3•Referências: 3

The human immune system is under great pathogen-mediated selective pressure. Divergent infectious disease pathogenesis across human populations combined with the overrepresentation of “immune genes” in genomic regions with signatures of positive selection suggests that pathogens have significantly altered the human genome. However, important features of the human immune system can confound searches for and interpretations of signatures of pathoge…
