Archaeological Investigations at Priory Close, Northallerton, North Yorkshire
The remains of part of a Carmelite Priory were investigated at Priory Close, Northallerton, North Yorkshire, in advance of a residential development. Two buildings belonging to the Priory were uncovered. A structure interpreted as the east side of the cloister was exposed, surrounded by elements of the south and east ranges. Archaeological investigations of a number of small sites, combined with information provided by antiquarian writers, indicate the existence of a number of churches and/or cemeteries in the vicinity of Ripon Cathedral. In two cases these demonstrably originate in the 8th century or earlier, and in the other, less well documented instances an early origin seems likely. Geophysical survey and excavation have demonstrated that iron age settlement features and early Anglo-Saxon burials discovered during road construction in 1983 were part of an extensive multi-period site, now a Scheduled Ancient Monument.
