Negotiating Neutrality on Collaborative Knowledge Platforms
This study examines how the English Wikipedia article on Prophet Muhammad negotiates neutrality and epistemic authority. Using a single-case design, it analyzes an archived revision through Critical Discourse Analysis, drawing on Fairclough’s three-dimensional framework, Entman’s framing theory, and Van Dijk’s socio-cognitive model. The analysis was organized around six categories: foregrounding of controversy, backgrounding of spirituality, epis…

The relationship between word formation and the meanings words convey has been a philosophical concern since antiquity. Scholars across disciplines have long engaged with the issue of form–meaning mapping, giving rise to two competing perspectives: one emphasizing the arbitrariness of language, and the other advocating sound symbolism (for details, see Perniss et al. 2010; Lockwood and Dingemanse 2015, among others). In Reichard’s (1944; 1950) wo…
An OT Account of Negation in Jordanian Arabic
Jordanian Arabic exhibits three forms of negation: preverbal, discontinuous and post-verbal. In this paper, we show how these three forms of negation could be accounted for from an OT perspective. Concisely, our main goal is to find out form-specific ranking(s) of the set of universal constraints that condition negation in this dialect. We argue that negation is tense-dependent in this dialect (viz. different tense forms opt for different constra…
A Prosodic Account of Negation in Jordanian Arabic
This study investigates the relationship between negation variation in Jordanian Arabic and prosody. Inspired by a variationist study (Sallakh 2021) which found that transitivity and tense had major effects on the choice of negation variants in Jordanian Arabic, we provide phonological and acoustic analyses of tokens involving transitive and intransitive verbs. Our results show that intransitive verbs are more likely to occur in discontinuous neg…
No case tampering once transfer domain is formed
This research article offers empirical evidence from Standard Arabic (SA) that an existing structural case assigned on an element by one head can be overridden by a new structural case assigned by a different head as long as the element (or one of its copies) has not become part of any previous transfer domain defined by the Phase Impenetrability Condition (PIC) (see Chomsky, Noam. 2000. Minimalist inquiries: The framework. In Roger Martin, David…
The domain of emphasis spread in Arabic
A suggested model of corrective feedback provision
Following Guénette (2007), Bitchener (2008), Bitchener & Knoch (2009), among others, I believe that previous studies on corrective feedback provision were flawed in terms of their “design, execution, and analysis” (Bitchener & Knoch, 2009: 204). As a commentary on previous research findings, the current paper aims to suggest a corrective feedback provision model on how future studies should be designed, so that comparisons can be safely made. The…
