  • Mules in the Antiquity of Southern Iberia revealed from proteomics

Open Access•Carmen Domínguez-Castillo, Eloísa Bernáldez Sánchez et al.•ARTICLE•Journal of Archaeological Science•2026

The management of equids in the Iberian Peninsula during the Iron Age (first millennium BCE) provides a key archaeological context for investigating the emerging stages of confluent breeding of horses ( Equus caballus ) and donkeys ( Equus asinus ). This scenario provided the earliest historical setting in Iberia conducive to the deliberate and systematic production of hybrids (mules and hinnies), with significant cultural and economic implicatio…

  • Knowledge of Laboratory and Archaeometric Techniques in Archaeology

    Open Access•Yolanda González-Campos-Baeza, Esteban García‐viña et al.•ARTICLE•Advances in Archaeological Practice•2026

We have assessed the knowledge and perceived applicability of 13 archaeometric and laboratory techniques among 159 professional archaeologists in Andalusia (southern Spain), who constitute 26.5% of the region’s registered archaeologists. Our survey reveals substantial knowledge gaps: whereas 54.1% of respondents demonstrate advanced understanding of radiocarbon dating ( 1 4C), over 70% display a lack of familiarity with most other analytical meth…

  • Sheep in Early Neolithic settlements in South Iberia, insights from proteomics

    Open Access•Carmen Domínguez-Castillo, Esteban García-Viñas et al.•ARTICLE•Journal of Archaeological Science…•2026•Referências: 65

Domestic caprines have been identified in Early Neolithic Iberian sites by collagen proteomics. • Sheep specimens are linked to contexts of seminal neolithization of the Iberian Peninsula (ca 7500 BP). • Radiocarbon dating suggests a synchronous dissemination of caprine management across Iberia. • The study is supported by a critical update of proteomic biomarkers for caprine identification. The presence of sheep ( Ovis aries ) and goat ( Capra h…

  • Wild and Domesticated Fauna in Desert Regions of the Near East

Eloísa Bernáldez-Sánchez, Eloísa Bernáldez Sánchez et al.•ARTICLE•Near Eastern Archaeology•2024•Referências: 17

The authors present the results of the archaeozoological studies of the 2019–2020 archaeological field seasons conducted in Saruq al-Hadid (Dubai, UAE) by the University of Seville and the Andalusian Institute of Historic Heritage (Instituto Andaluz del Patrimonio Histórico, IAPH). We analyzed two large assemblages of animal bone remains and, through the archaeozoological analysis, observed differences between two cultural and taphonomical contex…

  • Human Ecology and the Southern Iberian Neolithic

    Daniel García-Rivero, Esteban García‐viña et al.•ARTICLE•Journal of Field Archaeology•2022•Citada por: 5•Referências: 5

Archaeology has long incorporated the methods of the natural sciences and the theoretical principles of the overarching scientific framework. Most archaeologists acknowledge the importance of a systemic perspective in the study of the evolution of human behavior, with emphasis on the contexts in which individuals and populations lived and interacted. This article develops an ecological approach to the subsistence patterns and dynamics of the Neol…

  • Andalusi Populations at La Dehesilla Cave (Sierra de Cádiz, Southern Iberia)

Daniel García-Rivero, Ruth Taylor et al.•ARTICLE•Journal of Islamic Archaeology•2019

Few studies have dealt with the occupation of caves during the Andalusi period in Southern Iberia. This may be explained by the attention placed traditionally on the trinomial mudun (cities), husun (fortresses) and qurà (farmsteads), in which other forms of rural occupation have been generally overlooked. In this paper we explore the sequence at La Dehesilla Cave –based on the analysis of animal skeleton remains, pollen, seeds and fruits, and phy…

  • Knucklebones and Other Animal Deposits in the "Cruz del Negro" Necropolis

    Open Access•Eloísa Bernáldez-Sánchez, Eloísa Bernáldez Sánchez et al.•ARTICLE•Anthropozoologica•2013•Citada por: 3•Referências: 14

The “Cruz del Negro” necropolis in Carmona (Seville) is part of an archaeological site considered by some authors to be a Phoenician settlement. Findings from the paleobiological and taphonomic study conducted on the grave goods found in 38 funerary structures provide possible evidence to support this theory (along with other archaeological objects found there). Analysis of the animal remains found indicates three kinds of grave goods according t…

  • Actividad cinegética en el Yacimiento Calcolítico de los Páramos en Aznalcóllar (Sevilla, España)

Open Access•Eloísa Bernáldez Sánchez, Esteban García-Viñas et al.•ARTICLE•Espacio Tiempo y Forma Serie I…•2010
