  • Aerial and satellite remote sensing for Aboriginal archaeology

  • The Story is in the Rocks

W Boone Law, Michael Slack et al.•ARTICLE•Journal of Field Archaeology•2020•Referências: 21

The Aboriginal stone arrangements of Australia’s northwest Pilbara region are cultural features of considerable interest to Australian scholars. Despite decades of investigation, the function and purpose of the stone constructions remain largely enigmatic. In the absence of physical evidence, most researchers contend that stone arrangements served a ceremonial and ritualistic function. This viewpoint is based largely on ethnographic literature fr…

  • Reflecting on siliceous rocks in central Australia

Open Access•W Boone Law, Megan Lewis et al.•ARTICLE•Geoarchaeology•2019•Referências: 23

HyMapTM airborne hyperspectral imagery was used to discriminate and map hydrated silica mineralization in the Dalhousie Springs area of central Australia. A spectral feature fitting algorithm was used to match laboratory reference spectra with image pixel spectra, producing a scaled goodness‐of‐fit raster map of silicified “tool‐stone” sources in our study area. Subsequent fieldwork indicated that the algorithm mapped silcrete, a rock composed of…

  • Rockshelter Excavations in the East Hamersley Range, Pilbara Region, Western Australia

Maitland Parker, Martidja Banyjima Elders et al.•EDITOR•BOOK•Rockshelter Excavations in the…•2018

Rockshelter Excavations in the East Hamersley Range’ offers a detailed study of six exceptional rockshelter sites from the inland Pilbara Region of Western Australia. It provides highly descriptive, chapter-length accounts of archaeological investigations at Jundaru, Djadjiling, HS-A1, HD073APAD13, PAD 3, and HD073A03 rockshelters, which were excavated as part of a mitigative salvage program conducted at the Hope Downs 1 mine between 2007 and 201…

  • Pleistocene settlement of the eastern Hamersley Plateau

Open Access•Michael Slack, Michael Jon Slack et al.•ARTICLE•Archaeology in Oceania/Archæology…•2018•Citada por: 7•Referências: 25

Between 2013 and 2016, Scarp Archaeology developed and implemented an extensive excavation research program across the eastern Hamersley Plateau, an arid and mountainous physiographic region in the Pilbara biogeographical region of Western Australia. More than 100 rock shelters were excavated during the program, resulting in the documentation of 22 rock‐shelter sites with Pleistocene‐age Aboriginal archaeological deposits. This paper presents the…

  • Digital Terrain Analysis Reveals New Insights into the Topographic Context of Australian Aboriginal Stone Arrangements

    Open Access•W Boone Law, Michael Slack et al.•ARTICLE•Archaeological Prospection•2017•Citada por: 4•Referências: 7

Satellite‐derived surface elevation models are an important resource for landscape archaeological studies. Digital elevation data is useful for classifying land features, characterizing terrain morphology, and discriminating the geomorphic context of archaeological phenomena. This paper shows how remotely sensed elevation data obtained from the Japan Aerospace Exploration Agency's Advanced Land Observing Satellite was integrated with local land s…

  • Post-Last Glacial Maximum settlement of the West Angelas region in the inland Hamersley Plateau, Western Australia

Michael Slack, Kate Connell et al.•ARTICLE•Australian Archaeology•2017•Citada por: 3•Referências: 18

An excavation and survey program at West Angelas, in the Pilbara region of Western Australia, shows that the poorly watered interior area of the Hamersley Plateau was first occupied soon after the conclusion of the Last Glacial Maximum, and that significant use of this area probably only occurred during the mid to late Holocene. Although current archaeological research shows that Aboriginal groups have occupied areas of the Hamersley Plateau for …

  • Djadjiling Rockshelter

    W Boone Law, Dawn Cropper et al.•ARTICLE•Australian Archaeology•2010•Citada por: 18•Referências: 2

The Pleistocene settlement of the arid zone is a prominent research theme in Australian archaeology (Hiscock 2008:45- 62; Hiscock and Wallis 2004; Marwick 2002a, 2002b; O’Connor et al. 1998; Smith 1987, 2005; Thorley 1998; Veth 1993, 1995, 2005). Of particular interest is the inland Pilbara region of the western arid zone, which until recently was reported to have been first occupied between c.20,000 BP and c.26,000 BP (Brown 1987:27; Edwards and…
