  • Possibilities and Limitations of Dendrochronological Dating

    M O Phylatova, M O Filatova et al.•ARTICLE•Archaeology Ethnology and…•2026

  • Possibilities and Limitations of Dendrochronological Dating

    Open Access•M O Phylatova, M O Filatova et al.•ARTICLE•Archaeology Ethnology and…•2026

Calendar dating of archaeological wood presupposes the existence of long-term tree-ring chronologies. Until recently, the development of such chronologies for the Novosibirsk Region remained an unanswered challenge. Several methodological issues had to be addressed, including the assessment of spatial homogeneity in dendrochronological signals across the region, the enhancement of the composite climatic signal contained within tree growth pattern…

  • A New Approach to the Study of Archaeological Charcoal

    Open Access•Myglan, V S Myglan et al.•ARTICLE•Archaeology Ethnology and…•2023•Citada por: 3•Referências: 15

In recent years, dendrochronological analysis in archaeology has undergone a substantial transformation, offering an opportunity to use samples of wood that were previously considered uninformative. One striking example is the analysis of charcoal excavated from archaeological sites. We have studied 448 samples of charcoal collected from metallurgical (iron smelting) furnaces in the Kurai and Chuya basins of the Russian Altai Mountains. Earlier m…

  • Middle Holocene Glacier Activity in the Russian Altai

    Open Access•R K Nepop, A R Agatova et al.•ARTICLE•Radiocarbon•2022•Referências: 14

The available paleosol and paleowood data from the head of the Akkol trough valley, South Chuya range, indicates a climatically driven glacier dynamic in the Russian Altai. Radiocarbon dating of paleosols and paleotree fragments help determine the beginning of the Neoglacial in this high mountain region in the middle of the Holocene. New data limit the advance of the Sofiysky glacier at that time by the front of the Historical moraine. Less so th…

  • Archaeological sites as markers of Neopleistocene-Holocene hydrological system transformation in the Kurai and Chuya basins, Southeastern Altai

    Open Access•A R Agatova, R K Nepop et al.•ARTICLE•Archaeology Ethnology and…•2016•Citada por: 1•Referências: 1

Multidisciplinary studies using geomorphological, geoarchaeological, and geochronological approaches indicate contrasting environmental changes in southeastern Altai beginning from the Late Pleistocene. Twenty-eight new radiocarbon dates from the subaerial complex overlying Late Neopleistocene sediments in the high-altitude Kurai and Chuya basins confi rm the degradation of a single ice-dammed reservoir in that area during the Early Holocene. In …

  • Glacier dynamics, palaeohydrological changes and seismicity in southeastern Altai (Russia) and their influence on human occupation during the last 3000 years

  • Dendrochronological Dating of Buildings in the Central Part of the Residential Area at the Staroturukhansk Fortified Settlement1

    Open Access•Zakhar Yu Zharnikov, M A Rudkovskaya et al.•ARTICLE•Archaeology Ethnology and…•2014•Citada por: 2

The article presents the results of dating the Staroturukhansk fortified settlement – a monument from the time of the Russian colonization of Siberia, and briefly describes the history of Staroturukhansk. Comparative analysis of archaeological and dendrochronological sources revealed six periods of building activities at the examined part of the site, dating to the mid-17th–mid-18th centuries

  • A 2367-Year Tree-Ring Chronology for the Altai–Sayan Region (Mongun-Taiga Mountain Massif)

    Open Access•Myglan, V S Myglan et al.•ARTICLE•Archaeology Ethnology and…•2012•Citada por: 21•Referências: 12

Wood material from living trees and trunk remains of Siberian larch (Larix sibirica Ldb) from the upper treeline (2300 m) of the Mongun Taiga mountain massif was used for building up a 2367-year Mongun tree-ring chronology. The chronology is consistent with paleoclimatic data and reflects the main changes in the climate of the Northern Hemisphere over the last two millennia: the cooling of the 6th century, "Medieval warming," "Little Ice Age," an…

  • Dendrochronological Survey of the Towers From the Kazym Ostrog

    Open Access•Myglan, V S Myglan et al.•ARTICLE•Archaeology Ethnology and…•2010•Referências: 2

The study describes the results of the dendrochronological analysis of the Kazym (Yuilsk) Ostrog towers, which are now the exhibits of the Open-Air Museum of History and Architecture of the Institute of Archeology and Ethnography SB RAS. Based on the data, the year 1745 was identified as the date when the Ostrog was constructed. The reconstruction of the dynamics of fires showed that the Ostrog was rebuilt due to the destruction of the preceding …

  • The Church of the Saviour From Zashiversk

    Open Access•Myglan, V S Myglan et al.•ARTICLE•Archaeology Ethnology and…•2009•Citada por: 1

This article focuses on dating the unique monument of wooden architecture from the time of the Russian colonization of Siberia – the Church of the Saviour from the transpolar town of Zashiversk. For the first time the church is studied using dendrochronological analysis. This method is based on variable annual growth of tree-rings, and provides the most objective date with an accuracy of up to a year. Exceptionally representative samples of speci…

  • Year Tree-Ring Chronology for the Altai-Sayan Region (Western Tuva)

    Open Access•Myglan, V S Myglan et al.•ARTICLE•Archaeology Ethnology and…•2008•Citada por: 3•Referências: 10

The current paper presents a new 1929-year tree-ring chronology for the Altai-Sayan region (Western Tuva) based on analyses of wood material from living trees and trunk remains of Siberian larch (Larix sibirica Ldb) from the upper treeline (2400 m asl). The correlations between tree-ring indices and meteorological data suggest that maximum effect on radial growth is produced by temperatures in June and July. This makes it possible to use the resu…
