Introduction to Projections
David Bordwell's passing in 2024 reverberates throughout film studies, but especially for his many colleagues, mentees, former students, and cinephiles generally. It would be hard to exaggerate David Bordwell's role in the development of cognitive film studies. His work pointed the way for many of us in its rigor and precision. His attention to form and style and how they relate to viewer psychology has been unsurpassed. Bordwell was a tireless w…
Theory of Mind Negatively Predicts Reflection and Positively Predicts Moral Understanding
A key determinant of viewers’ ability to derive moral understanding from movies may be their ability to understand and reflect upon the beliefs that underlie behavior. We therefore tested whether a measure of theory of mind would predict reflection on a movie and viewers’ moral understanding of the film. We asked participants to write expressively about a lesson they derived from a film they had previously seen or were shown. Two studies demonstr…
In Memoriam
Friends and colleagues of Stephen Prince were shocked and saddened to learn of his death at the age of sixty-five on 30 December 2020 in Blacksburg, Virginia, after a brief illness. Steve was a good friend to many, a prolific scholar with a deep love of cinema, a beloved teacher, a trusted and valued colleague, and a generous mentor to younger scholars
Alternative Realities
From their very inception, movies have served two seemingly contradictory purposes. On one hand, they transport us to fantastical worlds and display mind-boggling special effects. On the other, they can document actual events and immerse us in scenarios that feel so realistic, we might forget we are watching a work of fiction. Alternative Realities explores how these distinctions between cinematic fantasy and filmic realism are more porous than w…
Art Moods and Human Moods in Narrative Cinema
This essay examines the usefulness of the concept of mood in studying the emotional impact of narrative cinema, arguing that moods are a neglected but important aspect of affect in cinema. It provides a broad overview of various approaches taken toward the study of affect and settles on a cognitive approach. Moods are defined as the affective character of a film, an expression of emotion and point of view, but also capable of eliciting affect in …
Moving Viewers
Everyone knows the thrill of being transported by a film, but what is it that makes movie watching such a compelling emotional experience? In Moving Viewers, Carl Plantinga explores this question and the implications of its answer for aesthetics, the psychology of spectatorship, and the place of movies in culture. Through an in-depth discussion of mainstream Hollywood films, Plantinga investigates what he terms "the paradox of negative emotion" a…
Spectacles of Death
Although screen violence is common in many genres of American cinema, Western film provides a useful entry point to its study. One finds in Western both a codified treatment of violence and countless revisions and reworkings of that treatment. The traditional Western embodies an American ideology of redemptive and purgative violence. As Richard Slotkin writes, Western myth portrays the redemption of American spirit or fortune as something to be a…
