Reframing Value in Higher Education
The study examines existing weaknesses in assessing the economic value of higher education from the perspective of the consumer, rooted in the lack of individualized pricing data. Despite decades of policy efforts aimed at improving tuition transparency, students and researchers remain constrained by publicly available institutional averages and opaque pricing structures that obscure the actual costs paid by individual students. To address this p…
College Students’ Instructor Mindset Perceptions and First-Semester Development
Extending the literature on growth mindsets, the study examines how students’ perceptions of instructor growth mindset beliefs influence development during the first semester of college. Using pretest-posttest data from 25 public 4-year institutions in Georgia, findings indicate that students perceiving stronger instructor growth mindsets report gains in academic self-efficacy. However, these perceptions appeared negatively associated with value …
Exploring social skills activities in college and the initial career outcomes of alumni
The study examines the relationship between college activities tied to social skills development and two measures of initial career success—one related to job attainment and another related to overall job quality—immediately following college graduation. Drawing on a set of data from over 18,000 undergraduate alumni who attended 68 private institutions in the United States, and controlling for a host of individual and institutional factors, findi…
Exploring the associations among major fields of study, pre-professional activities, and post-college job quality in alumnx of liberal arts colleges
Across several decades of studies seeking to examine the effects of college on students’ careers, earnings are the outcome that has captured the most attention, as discussed by Mayhew et al. (2016), and large-scale efforts like the College Scorecard feature median earnings as the only career outcome displayed, presented alongside graduation rates and annual average costs in its college search website, as discussed by USDOE (2023). The study sough…
The Development of Sense of Campus Belonging
The study draws on longitudinal data covering four years of college among a sample of students from low-income backgrounds, with histories of adverse childhood experiences, who enrolled at more than 150 four-year institutions. Analyses investigate factors that influence the emergence and development of students' sense of campus belonging, with findings highlighting the importance that having a mentor plays in early college levels of sense of belo…
The Long-Term Role of Undergraduate Experiences
Social Exclusion in the Arts
This chapter presents a broad interdisciplinary literature review linking artists’ economic precarity and need for but resistance to entrepreneurial skills, alongside colonial histories, structural racism, and hierarchies of taste in arts organizations. These themes are complemented empirically by engaging data from the Strategic National Arts Alumni Project (SNAAP) to demonstrate indicators of attrition and privilege of arts alumni relative to t…
Undermatching and Noncognitive Development during the First Year of College
Diverse pathways to graduate education attainment
The study contributes new evidence on the factors associated with graduate education outcomes within the first few years of completing college, with particular attention on the moderating influence of racial/ethnic identity. Drawing on Education Longitudinal Study, 2002–2012 data, analyses examined how students’ ascribed, entering college characteristics, and undergraduate educational experiences are associated with subsequent progression into an…

Institutional Selectivity and Good Practices in Undergraduate Education
Academic selectivity plays a dominant role in the public's understanding of what constitutes institutional excellence or quality in undergraduate education. In this study, we analyzed two independent data sets to estimate the net effect of three measures of college selectivity on dimensions of documented good practices in undergraduate education. With statistical controls in place for important confounding influences, an institution's median stud…
First-Generation College Students
Longitudinal data from eighteen four-year colleges were analyzed to better understand differences between first-generation and other college students in the experiences and outcomes of postsecondary education. These differences were consistent with theorybased expectations regarding the acquisition of cultural capital during college.
