Unpacking the “medicine wheel” rubric
The term “medicine wheel” has been used since the late nineteenth century to describe a wide variety of surface stone structures on the northern Plains. Numerous classification systems have been proposed to address the range of variation of these features, with Brumley’s system consisting of eight subgroups having general acceptance. Light from Ancient Campfires
Light from Ancient Campfires is the first book in twenty years to gather together a comprehensive prehistoric archaeological record of the Northern Plains First Nations. In this important examination of the regionâ s earliest inhabitants, author Trevor R. Peck reviews the many changes of interpretation that have occurred in relevant literature published during the last two decades. Beginning with the earliest archaeological evidence for people in…
Archaeologically Recovered Ammonites
Fossilized ammonites have been repeatedly excavated from cultural contexts, often in association with the Old Women‘s Phase archaeological culture. Archaeologists usually consider the Old Women‘s Phase to represent ancestral Nitsitapii (Blackfoot). The Nitsitapii word for fossilized ammonites is ‘Iniskim‘ or Buffalo Stones. Nitsitapii oral tradition records an ancient origin for the use of Iniskim. Originally, lniskim were used as part of a pre-h…
Late Side-Notched Projectile Points in the Northern Plains
The most commonly used classificatory scheme for Late Side-notched projectile points (LSPP) in the northern Plains divides specimens for the entire region into two types: the Prairie Side-notched (ca. 1250-650 B.P.) and the Plains Side-notched (ca. 650 B.P. to the Historic period). An attribute analysis of 2327 points from southern Alberta and southern Saskatchewan indicates that from ca. 1250 to 650 B.P. all specimens exhibited a similar range o…
