Grammar and grammaticalization in Zapotec
The present study contributes to the empirical basis of grammaticalization theory by presenting a grammaticalization profile of Zapotec, a language family of Mesoamerica. The discussion centers around co-grammaticalization of lexemes and constructions, polygrammaticalization, interdependence between syntactic and prosodic conditioning of grammaticalization, and mutual feedback between grammaticalization and morphosyntactic typology
Papabuco Consonants
Compare the cognates from Zaniza Zapotec and Texmelucan Zapotec, languages from the Papabuco branch of Zapotec spoken in the state of Oaxaca, Mexico. Reconstruct the consonant inventory of Proto-Papabuco and state the sound changes that have taken place in each language
The Lingua Franca
Whose name is hidden behind the anonymity of the key publication on Mediterranean Lingua Franca? What linguistic reality does the label 'Lingua Franca' conceal? These and related questions are explored in this new book on an enduringly important topic. The book presents a typologically informed analysis of Mediterranean Lingua Franca, as documented in the Dictionnaire de la langue franque ou petit mauresque, which provides an important historical…

Lingua Franca between pidginization and koineization
Published literature on Lingua Franca contains divergent views regarding its place in the taxonomy of contact language types. While this language is traditionally regarded as a pidgin, some scholars consider it more accurate to view it as a koine. This paper shows that Lingua Franca exhibits features that are consistent with both pidginization and koineization, and proposes to view it as located on the pidgin/koine continuum

Suppletion in Zapotec
This paper provides an overview of suppletion phenomena in Zapotec. As established by previous cross-linguistic studies of suppletion, most suppletion phenomena in Zapotec occur in the verb system. Nominal suppletion is attested in the possessed forms of selected nouns, such as
Phonological Adaptation of Spanish Loanwords in Zaniza Zapotec
In his work on the acculturation of the Nahuas to Spanish presence, Lockhart identified three clearly defined chronological stages, hypothesizing that these stages may “represent a universal aspect of the contact of cultures, at least on the indigenous side of large-scale conquests or intrusions” (1997:35). Lockhart’s research provides a useful framework for conceptualizing indigenous-Spanish language contact in Mesoamerica, and the purpose of th…

Origin of the Zapotec Causative Marker*k
This paper uses synchronic and diachronic typological data to trace the origin and development of the Zapotec causative marker *k-. It is suggested that the causative marker *k- arose as a language-internal innovation after Zapotec split away from its sister branch, Chatino. The paper relies on Song's (1996) typology of causative marker formation to show that the causative prefix *k- has developed out of the marker of the potential mood following…
Proto-Zapotec *tty/*tyand *ttz/*tz
This study is the first comprehensive historical and comparative treatment of *tty, *ty, *ttz, and *tz in all known subgroups of Zapotec. The study identifies the main changes affecting these consonants and proposes a subgrouping of the Zapotec language family on the basis of the findings. Among the major results of the study are the proposal that Northern, Central, and Southern Zapotec share a node in the Zapotec family tree, labeled Core Zapote…
Personal Pronouns in Zapotec and Zapotecan
This paper is a comparative and historical study of personal pronouns in Zapotec and Zapotecan. It is based on data from more than 20 Zapotec languages and several dialects of Chatino. On the basis of this study, a number of dialectal isoglosses involving personal pronouns are identified and full reconstructions of the Proto‐Zapotec and Proto‐Zapotecan systems of personal pronouns are attempted
