The multilingual lived experience of Mongol-Chinese in China
This paper explores the multilingual lived experience (MLE) of four Mongol-Chinese individuals. This lived experience is set in the multilingual context of the Inner Mongolia Autonomous Region (IMAR) of China. Compared to the ethnic majority Han people, who are Mandarin (Putonghua) speakers, and who study English as a L2, Inner Mongolian ethnic minority students’ experience is often trilingual, with Mongolian as their L1, Mandarin as their L2, an…
The Role of Accent as a Class Marker in the James Bond Films
The International Journal of James Bond Studies is an academic peer-reviewed journal dedicated to publishing interdisciplinary scholarship on all aspects of Ian Fleming’s James Bond franchise. The journal aims to develop contemporary critical readings of Ian Fleming’s James Bond across literary, filmic, and cultural history, and offers broader criticism of the popular appeal of Fleming’s creation and its relation to the spy genre. Volume 5, Issue…
Pronunciation and Linguistic Bias in Interviewing Arabic Instructors
The present qualitative study reports on a sample of six Arabic instructors (out of 30) who were asked to modify/correct their pronunciation of Arabic as it was considered "unsuitable" by members of the recruitment committee. Almost half the instructors believed that the corrections involved linguistic bias. The others did not take issue and welcomed such direction since they believed that modification may improve the learning-teaching process by…
Attitudes toward regional British accents in EFL teaching
In this attitudinal-based study, British EFL teachers report on their regional accents, both in terms of their own attitudes, and the reported attitudes of their EFL students. Drawing on interviews with 20, mostly, Northern EFL teachers, there are three broad findings. First, the participating teachers reported that EFL students sometimes found their accents difficult to understand, but appreciated, and often celebrated, their ‘difference’ noneth…
Accent and the manifestation of spatialised class structure
There is long-standing interest within sociological debate to understand social class inequality spatially. We contribute to this debate by using a spatially differentiated understanding of accent, used here as a 'window' to observe the formation of socio-economic difference across space. From a spatial perspective, using the work of Doreen Massey, we draw on a unique multi-sited qualitative dataset, which contains the narratives of over 200 youn…
Varieties of ‘standard accents’ among teachers in contemporary Britain
This article investigates accent variation within the UK, applied to the professional context of teaching. The purpose is two‐fold: first, to discuss a variety of accents in contemporary Britain, demonstrating how accents can be categorised based on the degree to which they mark the speaker's local origins. Second, by focusing on teachers’ accents within the context of teacher training in the UK, information can be obtained regarding which partic…
A Sociolinguistic Perspective on Accent and Social Mobility in the UK Teaching Profession
A new interdisciplinary approach to understanding the role of accent in relation to intergenerational social mobility is introduced here. Sociological analyses that attend to accent often focus on broader regional distinctions or construct limiting dichotomies of accents, rather than capturing the full variety and range of accents, often found at smaller geographic levels. Drawing on the case of the teaching profession and using qualitative data …
Accent and Linguistic Prejudice within British Teacher Training
Based on the responses of 32 British teachers, I report on a sample of three teachers who were told to modify their accents to varieties deemed more “professional.” The teachers perceive such directives to stem from linguistic prejudice and not merely a need to be understood, and such directives are based on someone else’s standards for “linguistic professionalism.” Ultimately, I wish to engage with policymakers in order to establish what the lin…
The use of English in Korean TV drama to signal a modern identity
While code-switching is quite a common phenomenon, this paper seeks to investigate a common but underreported use of code-switching. In this paper, I focus on the use of code-switching from Korean to English in South Korean TV dramas. The paper first briefly discusses the literature on the connotations of English language in the Korean media and then proceeds to focus on code-switching using data sampled from three Korean TV dramas. The previous …
