  • The Late Mesolithic juveniles of Yuzhniy Oleniy Ostrov, Russia

    Open Access•O V Batanina, Olga Batanina et al.•ARTICLE•Archaeological and Anthropological…•2026•Referências: 77

Juveniles remain a largely underexplored socio-biological category in Mesolithic mortuary research, despite their potential to shed light on social values and community dynamics. The burial site at Yuzhniy Oleniy Ostrov (YOO), Karelia, Russia, the largest known Mesolithic burial site in Northeastern Europe, provides a unique opportunity to explore the mortuary treatment of children and adolescents. This study uses osteoarchaeological methods in a…

  • An Early Metal Age Burial in Treugolnaya Cave, Primorye

    Open Access•N A Kluyev, I Y Sleptsov et al.•ARTICLE•Archaeology Ethnology and…•2026•Referências: 7

The article outlines the findings of a multidisciplinary study of an Early Metal Age burial of a woman in Treugolnaya Cave, Primorye—the first such burial in the region. The human skeleton was accompanied by funerary goods including stone and bone artifacts and ceramics. The most noteworthy specimen among the lithics is a polished knife, very similar to those from the late 2nd to early 1st millennia BC sites in Primorye. DNA analysis showed that …

  • An Early Metal Age Burial in Treugolnaya Cave, Primorye

    N A Kluyev, I Y Sleptsov et al.•ARTICLE•Archaeology Ethnology and…•2025

  • On the “Two Layers” Hypothesis of Human Dispersal in East Eurasia

    Open Access•V G Moiseyev, Vyacheslav Moiseyev•ARTICLE•Problems of Archaeology…•2025

The study is focused on testing how the “two layers” hypothesis of human dispersal in East Asia corresponds to currently available data on ancient hunter-gatherer populations from Siberia and the Far East. To do this, metric data on 119 satisfactorily preserved male skulls from Siberia and the Japanese archipelago were analyzed using canonical variate analysis and the k-means clustering algorithm. The analysis demonstrates that several Neolithic …

  • Analysis of Permanent Molars Lateral Enamel and Dentin Proportions for Determination of the Taxonomic Status of Isolated Dental Remains

Open Access•A V Zubova, Alisa Zubova et al.•ARTICLE•Problems of Archaeology…•2025

The article is focused on methodological problems related to determination of the taxonomic status of isolated dental remains using proportions of the lateral (non-occlusal) enamel and dentin of permanent upper and lower molars. The issue of taxonomic significance of thickness and volume of enamel and dentin remains debatable. It was suggested that their dynamics is influenced by homoplasy, when similar morphotypes can develop convergently. In th…

  • Differentiating Potential of “Archaic Traits” on Permanent Upper Second Molars

Open Access•Alisa Zubova, Vyacheslav Moiseyev et al.•ARTICLE•Problems of Archaeology…•2024

To reveal the extent of introgression of archaic features into the modern human’s dentition, we analyzed the distribution of nine dental non-metric features on permanent upper second molars of the pre-sapient population of Eurasia. Previously, it was argued that five of these traits, which are usually attributed to the so-called “archaic markers” (epicrista, posterior fovea, crista obliqua, trapezoid crown shape, additional odontoglyphic elements…

  • Some insights into the lives of builders of early Saint Petersburg

    Doris Gutsmiedl-Schümann, Claudia Gerling et al.•ARTICLE•Praehistorische Zeitschrift•2020

In 2014, the unexpected discovery of some mass graves shed light on the earliest days of the newly founded city of Saint Petersburg. The graves could be dated to the beginning of the 18 th century, and analyses of the 255 excavated skeletons indicate that the individuals buried there were some of the workers who were forced to the construction sites and contributed tobuilding early Saint Petersburg. In this article, we aim to examine the possible…

  • On the Origin of the Ryukyu Islanders

    Open Access•Vyacheslav Moiseyev, G Moiseyev et al.•ARTICLE•Archaeology Ethnology and…•2009•Citada por: 1•Referências: 4

To test various hypotheses concerning the origin of the Ryukyu Islanders, data on two systems of traits – craniometric and cranial non-metric – were integrated using multivariate statistical methods. The results indicate that the Ryukyuans are a hybrid group which formed from at least three components. The first two, associated with the Jomon and Yayoi cultures, are also ancestral for other modern Japanese groups. The specificity of Ryukyuans may…

  • Collateral relatives of American Indians among the Bronze Age populations of Siberia

Open Access•Alexander Kozintsev, Alexander G Kozintsev et al.•ARTICLE•American Journal of Physical…•1999

Nonmetric and metric traits were studied in cranial series representing prehistoric and modern populations of America and Siberia. Frequencies of the infraorbital pattern type II (longitudinal infraorbital suture overlaid by the zygomatic bone) are universally lower in Amerindians than in Siberians. The os japonicum posterior trace, too, is much less frequent in America than in Siberia. The only two Siberian groups with an almost Amerindian combi…
