  • Reclaiming the L-Word

    Alleyn Diesel•BOOK•Reclaiming the L-word•2011

This brave and moving collection of stories by South African lesbian women from different backgrounds reminds us, again, that rights are never finally won in legislatures or in court rooms. They are won by people exercising them. The authors of the stories and poems in this book have done just that. They have stood up to celebrate the dignity of lesbian women in South Africa. Each contribution is different. And each intensely personal. And each o…

  • Felines and Female Divinities

Open Access•Alleyn Diesel•ARTICLE•Journal for the Study of Religion•2009

From Neolithic sites in Anatolia, to Sumer, Crete, Egypt, Greece and India, cats, great and small, have been associated with female figures and divinities. Their power, intelligent self-awareness, and mysterious shape-shifting characteristics have exerted a profound influence on humankind. But, why divine females, in particular, should have become so closely associated with felines is a question that has not been given sufficient attention. It app…

  • Tales of Women's Suffering

    Alleyn Diesel•ARTICLE•Journal of Contemporary Religion•2002•Citada por: 5•Referências: 5

Although Hinduism offers the greatest living resource for the veneration of the Goddess, there is an obvious discrepancy between the respect paid to these divine images and the daily realities of the lives of Hindu women. However, I believe that the ancient, indigenous south Indian Amman religion, dominated by female deities and brought to KwaZulu-Natal by the original Hindu immigrants, offers a unique and valuable form of Goddess veneration. It …

  • The empowering image of the divine mother

    Alleyn Diesel•ARTICLE•Journal of Contemporary Religion•1998•Citada por: 3•Referências: 6

The worship of the Mother Goddess by Hindu women in KwaZulu‐Natal is very popular, as an ongoing daily devotion, as well as at the Goddess's various annual festivals, especially the Draupadi firewalking festival. A crucial question is how far this veneration of a powerful female deity brings empowerment, both to a woman's sense of her own worth and as recognition in the community. Pat Pillay, of Pietermaritzburg, is an example of a woman with lit…

  • The Ramakrishna Sarada Devi Ashram for women in South Africa

    Alleyn Diesel•ARTICLE•Journal of Contemporary Religion•1996•Referências: 4

The Sri Sarada Devi Ashram in Durban, South Africa, is not a feminist institution in the Western sense, and has no explicit aspiration to be such an institution. However, the author argues that, without the resident women being fully aware of it, the work being done there is contributing significantly to the education and empowerment of women in the Hindu community which it serves. The purpose of this article is to make its existence and contribu…
