A realist inspired barriers and facilitators evaluation of the co-creation process in the Youth-centred Participatory Action Project
This study examined barriers and facilitators of the first phase of the co-creation process as part of the Youth-centred Participatory Action (YoPA) project, a multi-country co-creation initiative to address health inequities by engaging adolescents in Denmark, Nigeria, South Africa, and the Netherlands. Using a qualitative design informed by implementation science and realist thinking, we analysed data from 22 transcripts of semi-structured inte…
Exercise and eating motivation in weight loss maintenance
OBJECTIVE: Physical activity and nutrition-related behaviors are crucial factors in maintaining weight loss. The interplay between the motivations to consistently engage in both behaviors is a fundamental yet understudied topic. The current study examines the reciprocal effects between exercise and eating motivation and their effect on steps and energy intake over a 12-month period. METHODS: Data were gathered from 678 NoHoW participants (a weigh…
Different sedentary behavior domains present distinct associations with eating-related indicators
Our findings suggest that adults with higher levels of SB in leisure-time and transport domains tend to report less healthy eating-related behaviors, irrespective of BMI, sex, and PA level. However, some differences in these associations were found according to the age tertile. This information may assist public health authorities in focusing their efforts in augmenting literacy on SB, namely on how SB can be accumulated via different settings. F…
Intervention and mediation effects of a community-based singing group on older adults’ perceived physical and mental health
Objective To examine short- and long-term effects of a group singing program on older adults’ perceived physical and mental health levels, and also investigate subjective well-being (life satisfaction, positive/negative affect and hedonic balance), body balance and serum biomarkers (C-reactive protein and erythrocyte sedimentation rate) as putative mediating mechanisms, controlling for the cognitive status of the participants. Design: The randomi…
Exploratory analysis of reflective, reactive, and homeostatic eating behaviour traits on weight change during the 18-month NoHoW weight maintenance trial
Behaviour change interventions for weight management have found varied effect sizes and frequent weight re-gain after weight loss. There is interest in exploring whether differences in eating behaviour can be used to develop tailored weight management programs. This secondary analysis of an 18-month weight maintenance randomised controlled trial (RCT) aimed to investigate the association between individual variability in weight maintenance succes…
The Long-Term Association between Physical Activity and Weight Regain, Metabolic Risk Factors, Quality of Life and Sleep after Bariatric Surgery
Bariatric surgery is currently regarded as a safe and effective long-term procedure for the treatment of obesity and related comorbidities. We analyzed the association between physical activity (PA), weight regain, metabolic risk factors and quality of life in patients submitted to bariatric surgery. This study also aimed to preliminarily assess how physical activity and weight regain may be associated with sleep quality and sedentary behavior. T…
The Role of Social and Physiological Variables on Older Adults’ Cognitive Improvement after a Group Singing Intervention
Population aging prompts efforts to help older adults maintain a high quality of life and independence. Group singing (GS) has shown benefits on social, physical, and cognitive domains, being a cost-effective strategy to reach these goals. Nevertheless, randomized controlled trials (RCT) evaluating systematic GS interventions and the interplay between their effects on those domains are scarce. Thus, the present RCT assessed whether a 34-session G…
The Dark Side of Motivational Practices in Exercise Professionals
According to the Self-Determination Theory, perceived job pressures can coerce professionals to develop more controlled motivations towards their work, and consequently increase the probability of using controlling motivational strategies. This study sought to analyze work-related motivations as mediators between two types of perceived job pressures: organizational constraints and perceptions of clients' controlled motivation and the use of contr…
Social support influences on eating awareness in children and adolescents
The impact of the social environment on healthy eating awareness results from complex interactions among physical, economic, cultural, interpersonal and individual characteristics. This study investigated the impact of social support and social influence on healthy eating awareness, controlling for socio-economic status, gender and age. Additionally, the mediating effect of self-regulation strategies was examined. A total of 2764 children and ado…
Association between BMI, body dissatisfaction and optimism among adolescents enrolled in a Pediatric Obesity Treatment Program
The Importance of Importance in the Physical Self
This study tested James's theoretical assumption that the importance people attribute to different physical self-domains, in combination with perceived competence in those domains, influences higher order self-concepts. Data from four large samples (total N=1,831) from Sweden, Great Britain, Portugal, and Turkey were analyzed. A new version of an instrument, the Physical Self-Perception Profile-Revised (PSPP-R), was used to measure perceived comp…
