Scarlett Johansson has described as futile her fight against a swell of deepfake porn images featuring herself—especially because they can be produced by almost anyone with free algorithmic software available online and with access to one or more images of her face. However, in this essay we maintain that within contemporary technocratic culture, the mediated star image of ‘ScarJo' always already reveals the complex convergence of both bios (life…
The analogue strikes back
As if responding to the widespread condemnation of George Lucas’s ‘CGI-heavy’ prequel Star Wars trilogy, J.J Abrams’s 2015 ‘reboot’ The Force Awakens displays an extreme reliance upon star presence and authentic practical effects, to an extent that produces significant textual effects at a variety of levels. We here show how the film is premised upon and preoccupied with the authentic and authenticating presence of the main stars of the first wav…
Metaphoricity in the real estate showroom
This article adopts an ecological view of cognition to analyze the role of the environment in scaffolding metaphorical experience. Using ethnographic material collected from two real estate showrooms in China, we describe how each showroom setting is equipped with to-be-phenomenologically-experienced objects designed to stimulate desirable sensorimotor experiences and altered bodily states during the guided showroom tours. By analyzing the qualit…
Selling (un)real estate with “ Shi (势)-nema”
Investigating what has been called the mise-en-scene of Capitalism’s Second Coming in China, this essay explores how cinematic principles have become divorced from the medium of cinema and can be found operating within contemporary Chinese urban spaces in order to increase the efficacy of real estate showroom settings. Specifically, we explore the effects of affectively distributed networks of human, architectural and nonhuman “actors” that appea…
Unethical Morality in "Documenting" Terrorism
First paragraph: The enemy must fear us. When this is over, there will be much more fear in the world. [...] Give the government an ultimatum. Say, “This was just the trailer. Just wait till you see the rest of the film.” The overhanging statement – which draws attention to troubling links interconnecting action cinema and acts of terrorism – is delivered towards the end of Dan Reed’sTerror in Mumbai(UK, 2009), an insightful documentary that unfo…
Deleuze, the ‘(Si)neo-realist’ Break and the Emergence of Chinese Any-now(here)-spaces
By creatively expanding Deleuze's concept of the time-image crystal, I productively fold together and engineer an encounter between two comparable cinematic movements otherwise separated by huge vistas of time and space. Here, I work to plicate the post-war Italian neorealist movement which Deleuze saw inaugurating the modern cinema, with a ‘postsocialist’ mainland Chinese movement that I playfully call ‘(si)neo-realism’. The films of both histor…
The method meets animation
Darren Aronofsky's The Wrestler (2008) and Black Swan (2010) each mount a sustained investigation into issues surrounding performance in and beyond cinema, across a wide range of different registers. The Wrestler reifies the backwards-looking ‘realist’ film that focuses on the past and memory, whereas Black Swan surfaces as a digitally augmented ‘expressionistic’ film concerned with breaking down barriers and reaching towards new heights of becom…
Affective Teaching for Effective Learning
In this article I explore the pedagogical value of Gilles Deleuze and Félix Guattari’s philosophical concepts for helping make an ‘event’ of thought, with a view towards fostering deep learning in Chinese students' learning theory and criticism in a second language. Paying attention to the qualitative role of bodies, humour and creativity alongside an expanded trans-personal concept of ‘educational life forms’ that stretches out to include an aff…
Deterritorialisation and Schizoanalysis in David Fincher's Fight Club
Taking a schizoanalytic approach to audio-visual images, this article explores some of the radical potentia for deterritorialisation found within David Fincher's Fight Club (1999). The film's potential for deterritorialisation is initially located in an exploration of the film's form and content, which appear designed to interrogate and transcend a series of false binaries between mind and body, inside and outside, male and female. Paying attenti…
