  • ‘You Load Sixteen Tons, What Do You Get?’. The Jodłowno Hoard (Pomerania, Poland) as Evidence of Long‐Distance Contacts in the Early Iron Age

Open Access•Kamila Nowak, Paweł Gan et al.•ARTICLE•Archaeometry•2025

This study presents multifaceted analyses of metal artefacts from the Jodłowno Hoard (Northern Poland), revealing that the metal originated from Iberian polymetallic ore deposits. Transported as raw ingots via Atlantic maritime routes, this copper was reworked locally into regionally distinctive forms. Elemental classification identified deliberate deposition patterns based on metallurgical properties, with artefacts wrapped together using lime b…

  • Radiocarbon dates from deposits sampled at the Vistula Spit canal excavation (Southern Baltic coast, Poland)

Open Access•Krzysztof Ninard, Anna Hrynowiecka et al.•ARTICLE•Radiocarbon•2025•Referências: 17

We report new AMS radiocarbon dates of 16 samples from the Holocene deposits of the Vistula Spit, a large coastal barrier landform on the Southern Baltic coast. Collection of the samples was conducted directly from the sedimentary succession excavated during 2020–2022 construction of the Vistula Spit shipping canal. The dated material represents several paleosol horizons and peat lenses buried in the dune deposits, as well as their substrate – be…

The Terra Ferrifera project investigates the landscape and environmental conditions of mass iron production in one of the oldest iron production centres in central Europe: Mazovia, Poland (fourth century BC–fourth century AD). Spatial analyses, settlement pattern studies, prospection, excavation and archaeobotanical analyses provide insights into one of its microregions

  • Anthracological analysis of wooden shaft remains from the Roman‐period sacrificial lake of Nidajno, Czaszkowo 1 site, north‐eastern Poland

    Open Access•Aleksandra Rzeszotarska‐nowakiewicz, Bartosz Kontny et al.•ARTICLE•Archaeometry•2025•Citada por: 1•Referências: 8

Here, we report on an archaeobotanical study of charred wood remains from eight iron spearhead sockets from a sacrificial aquatic site at Nidajno/Czaszkowo 1, Mazurian Lakeland, NE Poland (c. second–fifth c. CE), in search of botanical evidence for the selection of wood for manufacture of wooden shafts used with iron spearheads. The samples were analysed using a Nicon Eclipse ME600 metallographic microscope. The results show significant botanical…

  • Anthracological data as evidence of cultural distinctions in wood usage by communities from the Western Baltic cultural circle in Poland

Open Access•Katarzyna Cywa, Maciej Karczewski et al.•ARTICLE•Journal of Archaeological Science…•2024•Referências: 10

  • Natural and anthropogenic factors affecting intense slope processes in Eastern Europe during the Modern Period

    Open Access•Wiktor Piech, Anna Hrynowiecka et al.•ARTICLE•The Holocene•2024•Referências: 16

Detailed palaeogeographical studies of the accumulative fan in the Serteyka River valley in W Russia and underlying biogenic deposits were carried out. The base of a representative core of biogenic sediments in the distal zone is dated to 1291 BC, while its top to 1631 AD. In this paper, palynological, plant macrofossils, Chironomide and Cladocera, geochemical, geochronological and sedimentological analysis were performed. Four phases of biogenic…

  • Vegetation on the Wawel Hill, Cracow (Poland) in the early Middle Ages based on the fragmentary pollen record. Archaeological research excavation in the basement of building No. 9

Open Access•Dorota Nalepka, Andrzej Kukliński et al.•ARTICLE•Sprawozdania Archeologiczne•2020

Palynological research was carried out on layers archaeologically dated to the early Middle Ages in the basement of the former Austrian hospital at Wawel. The interpretation was based on the sparse number of sporomorphs presented in the samples, not on the percentages. At the end of the first millennium, on the Wawel Hill and in its vicinity, an open landscape developed with a mosaic of plant communities, including ruderal ones, fields, pastures, …

  • First representative xylological data on the exploitation of wood by early medieval woodcrafters in the Polesia region, southwestern Belarus

  • Forests and foragers

    Open Access•Agnieszka Wacnik, Witold Gumiński et al.•ARTICLE•Vegetation History and…•2020•Citada por: 6•Referências: 11

Newly acquired palaeobotanical data, including pollen, charred and uncharred wood, provided an exhaustive overview of the temporal changes in woodlands, which changes are due to the cumulative effect of natural processes and the long-term impact of pre-agrarian societies. We used the unique advantage of the peat bog archaeological site at Szczepanki located on an island in the former Lake Staświn (Masurian Lake District) to get an overview of woo…

  • Trees and shrubs used in medieval Poland for making everyday objects

    Open Access•Katarzyna Cywa•ARTICLE•Vegetation History and…•2017•Citada por: 9•Referências: 1

This article presents the results of the wood identification of 3,867 everyday objects dated from the 9th to the 15th century ad, which were excavated from 48 medieval strongholds and early urban centres in Poland. The analyses have shown that medieval craftsmen used the wood of 27 tree and shrub taxa. The timber used the most was Pinus sylvestris (pine), Quercus sp. (oak), Fraxinus excelsior (ash) and Alnus sp. (alder). Pine was used mainly to m…

  • Early Holocene hydrology and environments of the Ner River (Poland)

Open Access•Piotr Kittel, Mateusz Płóciennik et al.•ARTICLE•Quaternary Research•2016

The Ner River valley (central Poland) underwent substantial transformation during the Weichselian–Holocene transition as a result of fluvial processes and climate changes, resulting in the establishment of its present shape in the Holocene. A multiproxy study based on organic deposits from a palaeochannel fill (Lutomiersk–Koziówki) shows that after the channel was cut off during the late glacial termination, it became a shallow oxbow, fed by loca…

  • Development of modern forest zones in the Beskid Niski Mts. and adjacent area (Western Carpathians) in the late Holocene

    Open Access•Agnieszka Wacnik, Mirosława Kupryjanowicz et al.•ARTICLE•Vegetation History and…•2014•Citada por: 14•Referências: 9

Pollen analysis of sediments from three lakes and analysis of plant macroremains including charcoal from archaeological sites in the Mazurian Lake District provide new data for the reconstruction of vegetation changes related to human activity between the 1st and 13th century AD. At that time settlements of the Bogaczewo culture (from the turn of the 1st century AD to the first part of the 5th century AD), the Olsztyn Group (second part of the 5t…
