  • Our(?) Concept of Food or , They are Eating Their Pets

    Open Access•Niklas Forsberg•ARTICLE•European Journal of Philosophy•2025

This article examines the idea that deep disagreements are best understood as rooted in conceptual differences rather than differences in judgments and opinions, by means of a reflection on the differences between a vegan and a meat eater. The aim is not to develop a new theory of “deep disagreement” but to gain clarity about one field in which agreement, even fruitful conversation, is hard to reach. This article shows how the exposure of concept…

  • How to Measure the Firmness of a Belief

    Open Access•Niklas Forsberg•ARTICLE•Religions•2025•Referências: 9

One of the more well-known of Wittgenstein's thoughts about the nature of religious beliefs is that we go wrong if we try to vindicate or refute religious beliefs in the same way as we do in the sciences. This may make it seem as if Wittgenstein held a view where the world can be divided into two separate spheres, one hard, objective, world of facts where beliefs are held because we have proof for them, and another subjective, softer, vaguer, whe…

  • Unintentional investigations

    Open Access•Niklas Forsberg•ARTICLE•Policy Futures in Education•2022

This paper explores the notion of truth in relation to literature. It opens with a critical exposition of some dominant tendencies in contemporary aesthetics, in which narrow views of truth and reference guide the aesthetic investigations in harmful ways. One of the problems with such as view is not merely that it becomes difficult to talk about truth in art, but that it also makes the idea that we can learn something from literature problematic.…

  • Perception and Prejudice

    Niklas Forsberg•ARTICLE•Partial Answers Journal of…•2020

It might seem intuitive to say that attention is a matter of looking really closely at something, zeroing in on a particular object. In contrast to such an understanding of attention, it is here argued that attentive understanding of particular persons, things or events can only be apprehended by means of attending to the world in which they belong. Iris Murdoch's example of M and D is often described as a clear illustration of what "attention" i…

  • Carver, Cavell, and the Uncanniness of the Ordinary

    Niklas Forsberg•ARTICLE•New Literary History•2018

A predominant misunderstanding of the philosophical importance of paying attention to our ordinary language is that it supplies us with a standard of correctness. In contrast to this view, it is arguedhere that everyday and ordinary language are so difficult to bring into view and that this is something both J. L. Austin and Ludwig Wittgenstein maintained as well. It is precisely the failure to notice these kinds of difficulties that often leads …

  • Iris Murdoch on Love

Niklas Forsberg•CHAPTER•Oxford Handbook of the Philosophy…•2017

It is quite clear that love plays an absolutely crucial role in Iris Murdoch’s philosophy. This chapter argues that Murdoch, in contrast to much contemporary philosophy, does not so much develop a theory of love that explains why and in what sense love is good or bad for philosophy. Murdoch’s problem is not the question whether one ought to bring the concept of love into other regions of thought, but to make clear that love is always already ther…

  • From self-reliance to that which relies

    Niklas Forsberg•ARTICLE•Educational Philosophy and Theory•2017•Citada por: 2•Referências: 4

How is one to navigate between a thinking grounded in the individual and a claim for communality? In Emerson, this kind of difficulty comes into view in familiar sentences such as Speak your latent conviction, and it shall be the universal sense.’ How does the relationship between the personal and the universal look and function? In this paper, it is argued that Emerson may bring us clarity regarding the difficulties we are facing when it comes t…
