Popular Fundraising in the Greater War
This article explores the patriotic war bonds of the Second Polish Republic, which were sold both domestically and to the diaspora in the United States, during Poland’s border conflicts of 1918–21. It reveals how government and grassroots initiatives converged to mobilise diverse constituencies in Poland, including ethnic minorities, women and the poor. In the United States, these efforts were also marked by tensions between patriotism and profes…
British CEOs in the Twentieth Century
This article uses a prosopographical methodology and new dataset of 1,558 CEOs from Britain’s largest public companies between 1900 and 2009 to analyze how the role, social background, and career pathways of corporate leaders changed. We have four main findings. First, the designation of CEO only prevailed in the 1990s. Second, the proportion of socially elite CEOs was highest before 1940, but they were not dominant. Third, most CEOs did not have…
Making Ireland
This chapter explores the efforts of Irish nationalists to define and regulate the national identity of Ireland through the vehicle of country-of-origin trade marking. Specifically, it charts the rise of the Irish Industrial Development Association (hereafter, IIDA), a voluntary organisation that from 1907 to 1927 regulated the use of an Irish country-of-origin trade mark, styled Déanta i nÉirinn. The chapter begins with an overview of the histor…
Business Creation and Political Turmoil
What effect does political instability in the form of a potential secession from a political union have on business formation? Using newly collected data on business creation, we show that entrepreneurial activity in Ireland in the late nineteenth century was much lower than Scotland, and this divergence fluctuated over time. Several factors may have contributed to this, but we argue that political uncertainty about the prospect of a devolved gov…
Ethnic Fundraising in America and the Irish and Lithuanian Wars of Independence, 1918–1923
The close of the First World War signalled a proliferation of newly established nation-states across Europe. However, the unilateral proclamations of these states’ independence did not guarantee their international recognition, nor did it guarantee their financial viability. This article examines the funding of two such states: the unrecognized Lithuanian (1919–23) and Irish (1919–21) republics. Both funded their wars of independence by selling ‘…
